Using NVME Optane drive in usb enclosure

The stop code is also really referring to a driver problem though, rather than the drive itself ....... Will it boot into safe mode at all?

But - that suggests re-setting the drive to non Optane - which would lose the data ...........

Cannot get it into Safe Mode, just keeps going right to Automatic Repair then BSOD most of the time. Still waiting to hear back from EaseUS support about the Win 10 ISO with Data Recovery so will not give up hope until then.

Just edited above post anyway. The Dell info wasn't helpful as it just said to make the drive non optane, but that would lose the data then.

Well, good news is I received the Win 10 - EaseUS Recovery ISO.

I do not read Chinese (Simplified)...

Also can clearly see after loading what Intel RST drivers would load via DISM into the BOOT.WIM (which unfortunately is not the main one needed) I even downloaded the latest setupRST from Intel and extracted the drivers from the .exe and even those do not work...so the main part of the Optane drive is still not accessible...

So what I believe is happening is there are some Windows files on what it now considers the C drive - but whatever that is is not booting - keep getting the BSOD shown earlier. There should be more data there than 76 GB ideally.

Pretty much out of options at this point. Thanks again for all the posts, at least chased a few rabbits...wish I did not need to buy WinISO ($20) to deal with the ISO files as they were over the free tier size limit, and needing to extract BOOT.WIM from it to use DISM to try to add drivers but I know how to do it now but had never had to do that prior till now and likely will not ever again...

The UGreen NVME to USB enclosure which started this thread :) is very nice, mostly metal outer shell and supports various sizes, etc. Has USB-C and USB-A cables with a USB-C end into the enclosure.

Luckily there is no new way to encounter Optane in a new system. I know it works fine for people but when it encounters any issues, almost impossible to try to access it with today's modern systems and for whatever reason could not get the Intel RST inf files to load into the BOOT.WIM which might have made the outcome different...But ultimately here is is mostly HP locking down their BIOS to not even provide an Optane to disable Optane without losing data...

I'm sorry you are in this mess. We've all been there and have learned the hard way to be prepared for catastrophe. Since I earned my lesson, backup images have saved my bacon more than once. I now image my system every couple of weeks. Some here do it way more often than that.

Just used my Acronis backup image today, for whatever reason, a couple of changes I made suddenly killed my system and put it in a boot loop. After trying various fixes and two different restore points, I threw up my hands and restored Windows from last week's backup. Other than a couple of fresh app installs, I'm back up and running. Backup is FUNDAMENTAL! I keep harping on that, hoping that it will sink in! :)

just as an add on to this thread.

i have an Intel 1TB NVMe M2 type SATA 3x4 Optane SSD in a USB enclosure. this is now working fine as a backup drive
and read/write speeds seem normal after Optane was disabled on the drive.

1. i stopped and disabled the Optane service in Windows services.
2. i disabled the deleted the Optane drivers in the device manager.
3. while the Intel drive was still in the system i used Intel software to disable the Optane controller on the drive.

i then shut the system down and removed the Intel drive from the system.
i restarted the system 'without' any drives in the system and entered the BIOS.
i disabled the Optane settings within the BIOS. saved settings and shut down the system again.

i installed a new WD580 1TB SATA 4x4 NVMe M2 SSD and reinstalled Windows 11.

the Intel Optane drive was then connected to the system via a USB caddy the data transferred to the new WD drive
and then i formatted the Intel drive and it is now used as a backup drive.

i had no data loss as i didn't have any drives in the system when i completely disabled Intel Optane
once Intel Optane is disabled it can no longer carry out any functions as it is disabled.
as of now the Intel drive is working fine as a back up.

Glad that worked for you. There were several issues I encountered here, firstly the laptop came to me encountering 3F0 errors and would no longer boot into Windows in order to disable Optane in Windows (didnt even know the laptop had an Optane drive until I got into the BIOS and saw it mentioned). Then the largest issue is that HP limited the BIOS so that disabling in BIOS was not an option, only option was to convert to Non-Optane which would have erased the data. I learned much about Optane along the way but the crucial information is there is actually 2 interfaces on the 1 drive - 32 GB cache and 400+ GB drive. Certain BIOS settings, motherboard support, drivers are required to properly access the drive data, which I was not able to achieve even trying to inject the Intel inf files into the USB boot files...certainly the main lesson is 1 or more backup options but as long one can get into Windows somehow to turn off Optane or have a BIOS that supports that ability or like some recovery places one of a few specific motherboards, drive interfaces, drivers, BIOS, etc. then the data is essentially unable to be accessed...

I am really sorry to hear that. It looked like you were close! So could nothing be retrieved from that 78gb on Windows C? I really hope EaseUs give you a refund or I will feel guilty lol. I would push hard for that! But at least you tried everything.

Even with backups, Optane is a PITA. Because if your backups are system images, they won't restore to a non optane drive either.

Even with file backups on an external hard drive, I had that fail once, before restoring the files back to a new install of Windows.

Thanks to a tip from someone on here I now use idrive for backups. Backs up all files daily and I'm happy with it. It costs about £90 a year but has made life a lot simpler and more secure. If my drive fails I just download it all again. I do still do backups and images to external drives as well but not as often so don't need to keep spending £50 a time on new external drives. It's different to One Drive, it backups up all files but they remain on your computer as well. ie it's a full back up solution.

I'm sorry your daughter has lost her data. I'm wondering what that no entry sign is on the 399gb .........Locked? Or corrupted? Very frustrating if the data is on there and can't be accessed.

I think people in the know just swap out the Optane drive right from the start .....

Did she have a lot on there and is it available elsewhere? (Eg photos also on a camera or phone?).

I do get nervous my stepson will lose all his college work as he doesn't do backups (and I'm not allowed to touch his device lol). Must put my iDrive on his device (I can have it on more than one computer for the same fee). Just need to catch him when he'll let me do it!

Your experience here will make sure I do it asap! Even though his isn't an Optane drive.

Thanks Hazel123, I love iDrive! I use that on everything I have, PCs, phones, tablets, even Macs, but just didn’t have it setup on her laptop unfortunately…yeah even having an image backup might have been painful to deal with too…At my house have a Synology NAS and back stuff up there too,

do you have advanced BIOS settings available for the HP system.
my system is a 24" HP AiO i can get to the advanced settings this way.

I don't know how old your daughter is but by a certain age they are reluctant to let you "help" with IT stuff I found . Until it goes wrong. I was allowed to put AV on it when it was new and that was it - the device never to be seen again. Disappeared into the teenage den.

I hope it wasn't anything massively important to her.

The machine I had that was Optane had xxxx all in bios! Never mind advanced ones That was HP as well.Despite this I still use HP laptops because I like the keyboards.

She is finding some items on OneDrive at least and like I mentioned earlier, her passwords are way overdue to be reset or changed to passwordless/passkeys anyway. So now deciding on new laptop and beginning recovery process from OneDrive and resetting passwords. This one only had 1 USB-C snd A port anyway.

That would let me use my iFixit kit again since in HPs infinite wisdom this had 2 different screw sizes UNDERNEATH foot long rubber strips glued to the bottom of the laptop…and 1 T2 torx just for fun. At least the NVME drive wasn’t buried under the battery, so may just get a new drive for it to use for a while longer

a question if i may.
have you tried a live Linux bootable USB to attempt a recovery of the data from the drive
a live Linux USB will ignore Optane and should give you access to the data.

Something off happened Steve along the way, the H10 was no longer showing Disabled in the HP BIOS but now shows Non-Raid which I presume means it disabled Optane. But using the EaseUS recovery ISOs the C drive shows 79 GB but is inaccessible in the WinPE environment. The other 399 GB is called a Lost Partition and didn’t even get a drive letter. I tried some Linux booting early on but it just kept showing the 3F0 error and wouldn’t boot from a USB CD player or stick. Only these WinPE or media creation built sticks would boot. But you make a good point, maybe a Linux USB boot would work now. But I can’t explain the weird drive split now but worth seeing what Linux might see. The Disk Manager in the EaseUS WinPE said the c drive was empty but that can’t be true as there is some older version of Windows there from 2019 based on the file dates. But that gets stuck in Automatic Recovery and BSOD.

As far as Advanced BIOS, F8/9 didn’t work, will try the other options but I bet it falls into the HP didn’t even have option for this version. Early on I followed the HP guidelines to reset and update the BIOS.

What Linux distro would you recommend?

Ubuntu 24.4.1 LTS as its one of the most up to date with the latest firmware.
when in Ubuntu open the file manager using sudo

1. open a terminal
and write
sudo nautilus
press enter

this will give you full admin rights to the Intel SSD to attempt recovery

Hi Steve, booted in Ubuntu from USB but sudo nautilus failed with Screen seems not DRI3 capable or DRI2 followed by several dbus_object_path fails and Failed to attach to X11 shm. I will booting from it again and try again, the installer partway through the process said it wanted to get updates so perhaps it just never fully setup...

But I did also check what was labeled as "Windows" at /dev/nvme1n1p3 and is unable to access location, wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock or other error.
