Thanks. Well it’s brand new so I’d hope it isn’t defective but it’s possible. Although this seems to be a common problem when replacing Optane ssd’s.

Annoying but I’m going to put the old Optane drive back in again and check bios and see if there‘a anything to turn off.

One thing I did notice in the bios under security is - intel software guard extensions which can be disabled - wondered if that was related (SGX). Although Google says bad idea to disable that as hard to re-enable again.

Which means taking the back off again and removing the battery again! These modern laptops are a pain as you can’t just test things out without fully re assembling.

I never could understand why they would put optane memory in a system with an NVMe SSD anyway. How much difference could it possibly make?

I had another thread on that

. It is very fast in general usage. I was actually unaware it had an Optane drive as bought used.

Re the new Samsung nvme - I am thinking it’s not faulty as the image restored to it without issue. It just then wouldn’t boot.

Hmm… yeah I missed that, the procedure I posted is what I’ve done on several occasions but in each of those bios recognised there was at least a drive

One thing that is confusing me though. When I first installed the Samsung nvme I was able to boot from Windows 10 media to install the system image. Now I can’t boot from windows 10 usb media either. Since restoring the image. Don’t quite understand that.

If it wasn’t such a pain taking the back off each time I might try wiping the nvme on another pc and booting from windows media again to do a clean install- and see if that boots.

I have SGX also which was installed. I would not disable it when I changed out my drive with it enabled. You may have to clear TPM after you get booted to windows though. I really do not understand SGX though and perhaps there is more knowledge on this board than I have.

Um, I don't want to sound stupid, Lol, but have you checked your boot order in Bios. I don't even know if that would work.

Leave the back off so it will be easier to try to accomplish what you are wanting to do.

There is nothing to change the boot order to, because no drives are detected by the BIOS.

Basically it won’t recognise any boot device now (usb or external dvd).

I did just try that actually :). Changed first boot device to external dvd drive . Just get a black screen then. So changing it back.

Edit black screen did change after a while back to the error code “Stop code: Inaccessible boot device”.

Tried holding down start button for 25 secs to see if that made a difference (reset cmos?) but it didn’t.

Putting original drive back in now

Thanks - yes I’ll leave that alone. I did wonder about clearing TPM (or turning off secure boot) but decided not to meddle! Will replace drive.

It should be fine for testing purpose. Just be careful about static. Touch metal casing before touching inside
