UPDATE 10/8:

 Microsoft Support:

September 30, 2024 - KB5043178 (OS Build 26100.1882) Preview

For information about Windows update terminology, see the article about the types of Windows updates and the monthly quality update types.

Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the Windows release health dashboard.

Important: Windows 11, version 24H2 targets Copilot+ PCs and devices that previously used Windows Insider 24H2 builds.

Highlights

Note: Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.

Gradual rollout

These might not be available to all users because they will roll out gradually.
  • [Settings] New! There is a new energy recommendation to turn off high dynamic range (HDR). This helps to conserve energy on devices that have HDR displays. Go to Settings > Power & battery > Energy recommendations.

  • [Battery life] New! When your device's battery power is running low, a pop-up window will appear that asks you to plug in your device. This occurs when the battery level reaches 20% and while Energy Saver is set to “Always On”.

  • [Start menu] New! The "Sign out" option is now on the account manager when you open the Start menu. To change to a different user, select the ellipses (...). A list of other users appears to make it easier to switch.

  • [Taskbar] New! You can now share local files directly from the search results that appear in the Search box on the taskbar.

  • [Lock screen] New! Media controls now show in the lower part of the lock screen at its center when media is playing.

  • [Mouse] New! This update adds the option to turn off enhanced mouse pointer precision to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Mouse. There is also a new option to change the direction in which the mouse scrolls.

Normal rollout

  • [Copilot Pro subscription] New! You can now manage your Copilot Pro subscription in Settings. Sign in to your Microsoft account and go to Settings>Accounts.
  • [Screen readers] The NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) app and other screen readers fail to narrate all the screen content from some apps. This occurs when those apps run with administrator privileges.

Improvements

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
  • [Open Source Software] This update adds attributions to credits.txt files for Rust OSS components.
  • [Input Method Editor (IME)] When a combo box has input focus, a memory leak might occur when you close that window.
  • [WebView2 apps] They do not detect input from Xbox 360 and Bluetooth controllers.
  • [Task Manager]
    • Its Settings page might have a white background when it should not.
    • It stops responding when you switch from a high contrast theme to a normal theme.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

Windows 11 servicing stack update (KB5043117) - 26100.1881

This update makes quality improvements to the servicing stack, which is the component that installs Windows updates. Servicing stack updates (SSU) ensure that you have a robust and reliable servicing stack so that your devices can receive and install Microsoft updates.

Known issues in this update

Applies toSymptomWorkaround
All usersWe’re aware of an issue where players on Arm devices are unable to download and play Roblox via the Microsoft Store on Windows.Players on Arm devices can play Roblox by downloading the title directly from www.Roblox.com.

How to get this update

Before you install this update

Microsoft combines the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system with the latest cumulative update (LCU). For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

Install this update

To install this update, use one of the following Windows and Microsoft release channels.

AvailableNext Step
Yes (Windows Update)Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. In the Optional updates available area, you will find the link to download and install the update.
Yes (MSU)Before you install this update
To get the standalone package(s) for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website. This KB contains one or more MSU files that must be installed in order.

Install this update
Method 1: Install all MSU files together

Download all MSU files for KB5043178 from Microsoft Update Catalog and place them in the same folder (for example, C:/Packages). Use Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM.exe) to install the target update. DISM will use the folder specified in PackagePath to discover and install one or more prerequisite MSU files as needed.

Updating Windows PC
To apply this update to a running Windows PC, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Add-WindowsPackage -Online -PackagePath "c:\packages\Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu"

Updating Windows Installation media
To apply this update to Windows Installation media, see Update Windows installation media with Dynamic Update.

To add this update to a mounted image, run the following command from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM /Image:mountdir /Add-Package /PackagePath:Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu

Or, run the following command from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt:

Add-WindowsPackage -Path "c:\offline" -PackagePath "Windows11.0-KB5043178-x64.msu" -PreventPending

If you want to remove the LCU

To remove the LCU after installing the combined SSU and LCU package, use the DISM/Remove-Package command line option with the LCU package name as the argument. You can find the package name by using this command: DISM /online /get-packages.

Running Windows Update Standalone Installer (wusa.exe) with the /uninstall switch on the combined package will not work because the combined package contains the SSU. You cannot remove the SSU from the system after installation.

File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 5043178.

For a list of the files that are provided in the servicing stack update, download the file information for the SSU (KB5043117) - version 26100.1881.

Fix for this:
1)Disable the option: Get the latest updates as they are soon as available.
2)Restart machine
3)Search for updates. (it will find and install an update and also it will installed without restart)
4)It will show a the preview update (KB5043178) also and give the option to install it. After the install restart the machine.
5)Enable the option at step 1.
Thanks for that, boombastik. It worked. It is basically what hsehestedt suggested below, but forcing Windows Update to install the updates in the correct order.

How are you installing? Are you installing it manually or by using Windows update? If you are installing manually, be aware that you first need to install KB5043080 since that is a Checkpoint update and KB5043178 is only an incremental update.
I tried installing it by both Windows Update and manually by Microsoft Update Catalog, but both methods failed. The reason it failed is exactly what you suggested. I didn't realise at the time that KB5043080 needed to be installed first, so that's why the manual installation failed. The reason Windows Update failed was for the same reason.

The method posted by boomastik below forced Windows Update to install the updates in the correct order. I used that method, but either method should work.

Thanks for your help. :-)

I got 1882 direct through WU without difficulty. OK, so sfc /scannow isn't working correctly with this BETA build--it's not really a problem for me since dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth runs like a clock. Obviously, if you can restore the health of the build you don't need to worry about sfc giving you a clean bill of health, too...;)

I was reading through some of these posts, and it's obvious that some folks still think that the Insider builds are supposed to be spitting out bug-free builds every time, when the opposite is pretty much true. Insider's is a BETA build group. Every build is a beta build. If you don't want that, you are in the wrong place, and should revert to the commercial builds. (The just released commercial 24H2 build is several builds behind the current Insider's 26100.xxxx 24H2 BETA builds in terms of trial features.) Every Insider's build has bugs here and there, even if both sfc and dism give a clean report--those are only for certain basic system files. Not for the whole build, anyway!

Insider builds that are buggy are exactly what they represent themselves to be. Insider's are ALL BETA builds--all have bugs to some degree or other. If SFC isn't retuning the correct check, that, by itself, doesn't mean very much. If all my other software and games run fine, then I don't spend any time worrying over sfc problems because I'll see a new build soon, anyway. Now that I have abandoned the really buggy builds like Dev and Canary channels, the 24H2 Insider Preview build is much better, imo.

Basically, flipping out over a gronky sfc read out from our BETA build software doesn't seem like much of a problem to me. And so far it hasn't been a problem at all, for me. Evidently there are still people in the Insider's who don't understand what it is and what it isn't. I think that is unfortunate, as a lot of angst seems needlessly spilled over what seems to me a non-issue.

If sfc keeps returning errors after you have used dism to restore the build's health, and you aren't seeing problems and games crash when using the build, then reverting to an earlier build in which sfc runs fine is completely unnecessary, as far as I can determine. If the only way you are testing these beta builds is by running sfc /scannow and dism options, then I really think you are wasting your time in the Insider's groups...;)

Great New system. Exceeds my expectations by quite a bit, btw. I love the USB G8 SoundBlaster, it's quite an improvement over the G6!

The only problem is that this is no longer BETA. It is now officially released as GA (General Availability).

But I looked at the logs. The only thing that SFC is finding an issue with is the Edge WebView2 runtime.

It's a good test for compulsiveness, maybe.

I presume that there has been no rush to fix it because it has no effect on the performance or reliability of Windows. (No, I don't know that for certain.)

I get the error "Install error - 0x800f081f" when attempting to install using Window Update. Not about the download an ISO and start a new install for this!

Downloads to about 11% before it fails.
Install gets to 100% and still fails. KB5043080 is already installed. Any ideas anyone?

Wow, what a mess. I haven't had any of those issues. I must say i've been running 24H2 for quite a while. The only issue I got was HP printer app running haywire but that's it. I've also forced installed it on older PCs with a command line and let windows install drivers without issues.

No issues for me after downloading the Assistant at Download Windows 11
After installing and rebooting the KB5043178 was found after searching for updates. On one of my two Bitlocker protected computers I got this after rebooting:

1728041516318.jpeg

But the install resumed (I was very nervous....) and I have never seen this request again until now. Both computers are on 26100.1882.
All good.

Is it only those who used the .1882 update from a few weeks ago affected? Because I am, with the scannow errors and undeletable crap in cleanup.

Most who are 1882 have the errors. Regardless of when, or how, they did the update.

I made clean install of 26100.1882 and got nvidia installation automatically of version 560.94 (It's for Aug 24).
Before (22631.XXXX) I got old version of nvidia (About year 2020) each time I made clean install.

Thank you @hsehestedt , installed KB5043080 first via DISM and it worked. I seriously wish all updates could be installed using DISM, as Windows Update is slow and unreliable.

Amen! I wrote a program that adds all the updates to a Windows image so that they are automatically installed during Windows installation and this works fine for all versions of Win 10 and 11 EXCEPT that I have not been able to get it to work with 24H2. I hope to eventually get this figured out, but for now it's simply not working for me.

As an alternative, what I am doing for now is using UUP Dump to obtain the latest builds that have all the updates already integrated.

Anyone seen network problems since updating?

Periodically I get web "ERROR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE"
plus the internal link to my NAS drops out

Restarting the comp fixes it.

Errors only on this one compatible comp.
