Solved Laptop Battery life

Greetings,
I have a MSI Delta 15 and the battery seems to be depleted after a year and a half.
How can I get a definite answer as far as my battery life expectancy.
I merely get 3h now. The MSI center tells me my battery is in a good health. My logic, if the original battery is in good health, I still should be getting 6 to 7 hours ?

Any help is much appreciated, and if not, have a beautiful 2024 !!

Win + X open Terminal (admin) and copy paste the following command:

powercfg /batteryreport

Next go to C:\Users\incedis (or whatever username you use) and open battery-report.html (you can chose to open it in browser). Scroll down a bit and and check the Design Capacity (when the battery was new) and Full Charge Capacity (how it's currently doing while Fully charged).

I have always heard that keeping a laptop connected all the time is not good for the battery. I guess, from the screenshot, its not a true statement ? The rig has been connected most of the time since day one. The battery seems to have kept most of its juice.

Based on above - graph your battery has 20% less capacity now.

If charged at 100% all the time - it's sure to drain slowly. Same goes - if drain bellow 20%. Similar to smartphones - it can prolong its life (sustain a higher capacity longer) - if kept between 20% - 80%, where 40% - 60% is the most optimal value - but unpractical if used as a portable unit. MSI does have a feature in its app - to keep it charged at max 60% if plugged in most of the time:



Also has a Battery Calibration feature (icon from left corner) - which in theory - should stabilize the max capacity (or at least - the max full charge capacity - should be displayed more accurately after running this tool). Basically, drains the battery to 0% only to recharge it shortly after.

If above values of -20% are still to high, you could give it a run. MSI recommends doing this every 3 months or so - but this too (using this tool) - can have a minor impact on lowering its capacity (you might loose around 02% every time you use it - more or less).

If you can get 3 hours out of a battery, that is an achievement. None of my laptops will go more than about two and a bit, but then I run at high performance all the time at work. If I am going to be on a plane or something and I am just using Word or Excel, then I can set the lappy to run in battery saver mode and get mayyyybe 3 hours.

Neves is right, though. your battery is down 20% from when it was new. That may account for the lack of run time.

20 % drainage after 1 year and a half, seems acceptable to me. Will try to recalibrate the battery and see what goes.

My full charge capacity 3 years ago was 43,092 mWh. It's still 42,260 mWh right now so, I barely lost 2%. It has been connected most of the time since day one also (typically around 97%-98% charge). Basically, if you hardly ever use the battery and you also never stress it too much, then when it comes to the subject of accelerated battery aging in modern-day laptops the dominant factor by far is always the temperature.

That may be true, but I have Intel Graphics in my crappy old laptops. lol

There might be BIOS option to limit the charge level to 80% which can improve battery life

I guess a myth has been busted about the battery health when a laptop is connected most of the time. Thanks for clarifying.
Did not know about temp. Probably the main reason why I have lost 20%. When I did open up my rig to clean it, I found the fans covered in dust.
