Hi everyone,

I am hoping someone can help me troubleshoot an ongoing crashing issue on my laptop. This has been happening for over a month, but the crashes have become much more frequent in the past week.

Problem
The laptop boots up normally and appears fine initially. However, after about 5 to 10 minutes of use, the entire system freezes and crashes to a Blue Screen of Death.

Observed Errors
The system triggers one of the following two error screens:
  • "Stop Code: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (0X101)"
  • "MACHINE CHECK EXCEPTION"

What I tried
  • Completely reset the laptop, but the crashes continue to happen.
  • Ran diagnostic tests, but none of them detected any issues.

Extra details
Because the problem persists across a complete reset and diagnostics pass without error, I am wondering if this might be a physical hardware problem. Any advice or crash analysis troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey bjdavis51, welcome to the forum.
That combo of CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT and MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION is almost always a hardware or firmware sign that one of your CPU cores is locking up entirely. Since it happens like clockwork after 5–10 minutes—and you’ve already tried a clean Windows reset—we can pretty much rule out standard software bugs or bad drivers.
While you're grabbing those logs for @glasskuter, here are a few things worth looking into that fit that exact timeline:
First, keep a close eye on your temperatures. A crash that happens strictly 5-10 minutes after booting is a textbook sign of overheating. Grab something lightweight like Core Temp or HWMonitor as soon as you boot up. If you see the CPU temps climbing up toward 90°C or 100°C right before everything freezes, your fans might be clogged or the thermal paste has dried up.
Second, check your BIOS version. You're running an Insider/Preview build (26200) on an 11th Gen Intel chip. Preview builds can occasionally surface deep-level hardware or microcode flaws that stable builds skip over. Head to HP’s support site for your specific Envy model and make sure your BIOS is completely up to date, as manufacturers bundle critical Intel stability fixes in those updates.
Lastly, try a dedicated CPU test. Built-in Windows diagnostics are pretty basic and miss a lot. Try running the official Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool. If the CPU is actually failing under load, that tool will usually trigger the blue screen right away and give you a definitive answer. Also, since you have 64GB of RAM, if that was an aftermarket upgrade, it might be worth pulling one stick out to see if a single module stops the crashing loop.
Let us know what your temps look like, and drop the link to your logs whenever you get a chance to upload them!

wondering if this might be a physical hardware problem.

Highly likely.

Please perform the following steps:

1) Run admin PS > post a share link

Code:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OSRecoveryConfiguration | Set-CimInstance -Property @{AutoReboot=$false}
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OSRecoveryConfiguration | Select-Object AutoReboot

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OSRecoveryConfiguration | Select-Object DebugInfoType

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystem | Set-CimInstance -Property @{AutomaticManagedPagefile=$true}
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_ComputerSystem | Select-Object AutomaticManagedPagefile

bcdedit /enum '{badmemory}'

2) The BIOS Version/Date Insyde F.13, 10/19/2023

Upgrade the BIOS: F.13 > F.17

3) Download and install: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI – v10.8.7.0

4) Plan to run overnight while sleeping: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI – v10.8.7.0

Power on the computer and repetitively click F2 > overnight run the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics in system > extensive > loop until error > in the AM if there have been at least 2 loops > click esc > run any component tests as needed > take pictures with a camera or smartphone camera displaying each test performed with each result

5) More rigorous tests will be posted as needed pending the above results
