Laptop will not go to sleep!

disabling apps that interact with mouse. I guess all the apps interact with mouse. Maybe I misunderstood you.
I just meant looking for any apps that control the mouse.
For example, in my Device mgr, Human interface devices section there is an entry with the word mouse in its name. If I check its properties then I can see a Dell driver and that would make me want to
- disable that device, or
- remove its driver to let Windows replace it with a default one, or
- find the controlling software in Settings, Apps so I can uninstall it.

hmm but my external mouse is disconnected and I didn't touch the touchpad.

Is it safe to assume it's a hardware trigger? and not a software issue?
Just disable the touchpad from BIOS or key combination or Device Manager and try to put the computer to sleep.
