Solved Latest Macrium Reflect 8 updates


MR8 subscribed is now gone from my daily driver. Evaluating an alternative and may do the same with the free version on 2 other PC's. Reasons:
- security exposure with image mount (rare but inconvenient when needed
- backup VSS issues (mainly Microsoft issue
- Emergency recovery with Boot Menu or USB cannot connect to my Wi-Fi 6e router

@Quandary Everyone is complaining about these recent issues with Macrium, but everything comes to an end. We all knew that the free version was in its death knell. Any product that goes without support for as long as version 8 has can not be expectd to work 100% forever. What we weren't expecting is for 8.1 to be affected as well, but it is. Now I see where 8.1 reached end of life on 2/27/26, Though I hope they will, Macrium is under no obligation to fix it either and TBH, I do not think they will..

I rarely mount an image so my workaround is to use a Windows 10 VM for that purpose if it's ever needed. I might not like it, but I can sacrifice the mounting function In Windows 11 as long as my 8.1 will still create and restore images OK, which I believe the free version will also do. So I'll ride that horse as far as it takes me with my images. I also use Haselo so if Macrium ever completely quits, I've got it covered.

Yes, all good things must come to an end but parting could be just as important as beginning. When that end comes because of greed it leaves bittersweet taste that doesn't leave much of desire to continue with "new and improved" ad continuum.

I've been running Hasleo Backup in conjunction with Macrium for quite some time now on three machines. Macrium backups on Mondays and Hasleo on Thursdays. Anyway, that started in preparation to ditch Macrium X whose subscription just expired on my ARM64 machine and I refuse to renew it as I hate subscription software. I had a paid copy of Macrium 8.1 on the two Intel machines but now that it's days seem numbered as well looks like Hasleo will soon be my sole backup software.

There are other great options. Look around. Reflect is not my main backup application.

Another vote for Hasleo. I am still using MR8.1 (paid), but refused to subscribe to MRX. I have been testing the Hasleo Backup Suite (HBS) against both MR8 and Easeus Todo Backup Home ETBH (paid - lifetime) for six months now, every three weeks. In my testing, HBS is far faster than ETBH, and marginally faster than MR8. HBS also produces the smallest disk/partition images. My testing is documented in a Topic on the Hasleo Backup Forum.

Based on my experience and extensive research/reconfigurations there are a small number of PC's that are impacted by this KB. There may be more than one cause of the failure. One of my PC's is one of those that have the issue, and this is after a fresh install of Win 11.

After doing a reset of the VSS I can run both MR8.1 and Hasleo. If the backup takes over 5 minutes the backup will be successfully created but the backup program may not complete. I have not tried any other backup programs, so people that say xyz works may not have an affected PC.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.
That's what I did several years ago and I would do it again in a heartbeat!

:D:p This has a bit of a different meaning now than it did at original offer. The license you may have wanted to keep doesn't even work properly anymore... that helps the ol' encouragement factor I guess :rolleyes:

That's poor service. Under UK law if their product (Reflect 8) is bust then they are obliged to fix it or offer suitable compensation within 6 years of purchase which I will shortly be challenging them with else it's the Small Claims Court for Macrium.

Using Macrium R 8.1.8853 (current) and created a rescue disk.

Encountered an old problem which Macrium then said they had solved.. using the boot disk, the window was too large to fit on the screen (14.1" laptop, t440s) so the buttons bottom right and right-most partition in the screen were not visible or accessible when attempting to restore a partition, even when I tried dragging the window.

Eventually I had to create the MR boot menu and initiate restoration of the Windows partition when booted normally, and rely on the restart.

Clearly this is inadequate and would not help if the PC did not boot into Windows.

Perhaps time for a change?

For this offer you can also trade in your V7 keys, which I did. I will redeploy my V8.1 keys to older gear. I imagine as their update document mentions V6 those keys are also eligible.

Spent a few hours updating four devices to "X". On each device I built and tested boot menu, USB thumb drives and ran backups. Only one device, an old device, caused issues. Needed to Override the network driver in the Rescue Media.

Watch, within a month XI will be out. Install, update, rinse and repeat.

I'm currently in the process of migrating to Hasleo Backup. I've already created a few backup tasks and so far everything looks good. I'll keep experimenting with Hasleo Backup and if I'm satisfied I'll buy a perpetual license to support the development. Macrium on the other hand can keep their subscription software, I'm not interested.

After the Patch Tuesday update, I had to follow your 06-08 Check instructions and update both my PCs to SVN 9. After that, I updated 2 Macrium 8 Free boot drives and 2 Windows Recovery drives and successfully booted from all 4. 👍
