Concerning the driver update, on my system I ended up with a blank screen for over 20min which forced me to hit the reset button. When I got back to a desktop I was still on the .28 drivers and the nVidia App was asking me to re-download the new ones.

I think I'll stay on these for now and skip the new drivers.

hmm.. maybe it is a bug in the Nvidia App.
I don't bother with the Nvidia App and only grab the driver installer manually...
never had an issue..
but I do have a slightly older gfx card.
EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 8GB XC3

Does not compute. 10-15% is not 30 or 145%.

Looking at Newegg, the least expensive RTX 5090 is $2.9k. That's Zotac's list price for the card. I don't know what Zotac's launch price was for the card, but I imagine that it was much closer to $2k.

At BHPhotovideo, the lowest price of an in-stock card is $3170. I suppose that's better than the recent past, when no 5090 cards were available from stock.

It may not be fair to mention cards that most of us wouldn't buy at $2k.

Does not compute. 10-15% is not 30 or 145%.

Looking at Newegg, the least expensive RTX 5090 is $2.9k. That's Zotac's list price for the card. I don't know what Zotac's launch price was for the card, but I imagine that it was much closer to $2k.
You need to think about what you're looking at. It's not 30% or 145% of the retail or selling price, but rather the manufacturer's build price. I build boards in China, they cost around $12. They wholesale for $70 and retail for $85-90. If I had to pay the 145% tariff, it would raise my cost to around $29. Clearly, if I want to continue selling them, I wouldn't multiply the wholesale or retail price by the same percentage or I'd be out of business!

We have no idea what the assembled boards cost in quantity coming out of the factory, but I'm sure it's no more than a few hundred dollars for parts & labor.

Thanks for the information.

I knew that there was a markup, but that's more than I imagined.

I presume that nVidia cards from overseas come in their complete retail packages. Do you think the retail prices are 5-10X the price at the dock, absent tariffs?

Manufacturing cost is just one part of the equation, the company has to consider all the product development costs, marketing costs, distribution, returns, etc. Oh, and I forgot profit! :lmao: Those products don't magically fly from the shipping dock direct to the consumer's mailbox, there are anywhere from one to three steps in the chain before the consumer has the product in their hands, and every one of those steps takes a bite out of the profit.

I honestly can't say what the GPU costs to manufacture, but my experience with over a dozen smaller products produced in China suggests that the board assembly is just one part of a much larger puzzle.

And the pieces are not readily available for public view.

The main effect of the tariffs so far seems to be a lot of stuff not being shipped, in expectation that the tariffs will be lowered.

The motto of the current administration should be "uncertainty is our most important product". (Apologies to GE, as they were decades ago.)

For sure no company wants you to know what a product costs to make, that's typically a pretty closely guarded piece of information. I think if you have seen recent news, the tariffs have been decreased. ;-)
