Basically, one is supported by the OEM should something go wrong including a warranty replacement and the other as in NVIDIA provided drivers are generic and you are on your own and assume your own liability. At least you know one has been thoroughly tested by the OEM while the other is YMMV.

99.99% of cases - 2nd option (Direct from Nvidia) - would be the right answer. Mainly cause OEM don't upgrade their drivers - even when there's noticeable improvements compared to that past Nvidia version - which was used/modified to create the OEM drivers. BUT, once in a blue moon (maybe even up to a decade or so) - the OEM drivers happen to be the right choice for newly released GPUs - simply because the card was tested/known to work with those OEM drivers - while the latest Nvidia version (maybe rushed - while optimized for newly released AAA games) - proves to be problematic for specific OEM models - as was the case with RTX 50-series (and even some of the 40-series) - and Nvidia's 572.16 driver. Troubleshhoting the OEM cards in question - some were already pushed to maximum in terms of OC by the OEM - and the Nvidia drivers would introduce a slight Overclock of 100 MHz - which caused major instability issues on the already OC-ed OEM cards. Other cards couldn't boot after instaling this drivers - which i suspect to be caused by OEMs not sending their custom Subsystem ID (inf - containing information about the specific card model, its VBIOS, and unique configurations from the OEM) in time - so the Nvidia Driver would detect the card for installation - using the Hardware ID, but upon reboot while running a Subsystem ID check - couldn't recognize the card. To be fair - even the OEM drivers had their own set of issues - not properly optimized for Windows power saving features or/and multiple displays. So even in this case OEMs - are more like a temporary solution.

OEM drivers tend to suffice - for Audio Drivers (in this case - they're actually the better/recommended option - most of the times, also the only way to use specific embed audio software), network drivers, card readers and such - but GPU drivers are usually the better option by far - using the manufacturer (Nvidia/AMD/intel) drivers. Only reason the manufacturer recommends OEM drivers - is tied to situations like above (with Nvidia's 572.16 driver), a recommendation/stipulation -included by Nvidia's legal team - intended to prevent possible lawsuits. Seriously, i ran into systems that were bootable and functional with OEM drivers almost the same as Windows basic drivers (using compatible IDs). Without the latest drivers from manufacturer - the GPU would run at 30% of its actual potential (more common in the old days - but even today you'll find OEM drivers which are noticeably lacking in terms of optimization).

That is why I said it's really two different scenarios. OEM is not going to give you the best performance but just stability and warranty if something goes wrong as when you have a problem with NVIDIA, at least their forums seems to take feedback. With Intel, they will tell you to use the OEM drivers if you try to report any form of issue. When Windows 11 first came out or during the previews, can't remember. There was a version that even when you clean install using the installer, it will cause a black screen issue with any versions that get installed unless you manually uninstall each driver so Microsoft Basic Video Driver shows up and basically as long as you do not have that version of the driver installed first, there won't be the problem. For NVIDIA, you are right about the OEM can be old as for example, the latest for my system is still 27.x.x.x which is WDDM 2.7 and not WDDM 3.0/3.1 which is what Windows 11 wants which is why I never did use the OEM version. Besides, I am sure the reason it's OEM because when NVIDIA's vendors who provides the cards for the OEM's, it does not include support or warranty from the company that built the boards so it's up to the OEM to provide the support and warranty. It's similar to before when people bought ATI, now AMD, there were the OEM versions of the cards which did not have support/warranty from ATI, I don't remember if there were differences between the hardware specs on the OEM vs Retail versions or not and then there were retail versions of the card that has the support and warranty from ATI. With NVIDIA, NVIDIA does not make graphics cards or anything for that matter as the chips are made by TSMC while the reference boards are made by someone like MSI which is the design all brands will use. So even a DELL might be using a board from MSI. Which is why I was talking about from a warranty/support perspective from the OEM. Let's say you put your card on the generic drivers and it killed the video card, the OEM can basically say the warranty is void if they somehow discover one used non-OEM drivers as they are not supported but if the same thing happened using the OEM drivers then they would have to assume liability. As for audio drivers, the only one that OEM works better is Intel SST because the other components will not be compatible unless it came from the OEM. In other cases using Realtek Audio Drivers for example, the only thing that needs to be OEM is really the GUI and also the other part like Dolby and Waves. The other stuff like the main UAD audio driver, software components can all be the generic stuff without problems. For network drivers, is there such a thing as OEM Intel drivers or even Qualcomm/Atheros drivers, they are just drivers that will work on anything with the chip because even for Killer, they still use the standard drivers from Qualcomm/Atheros and then they just add their app on top of it. Card readers atleast for Realtek is generic and not really branded either as long as you use the correct ones for that device id. I am one of the moderators of laptopvideo2go and I know in the 2000's, the Nvidia generic drivers did not work on laptops and notebooks without hacking the inf file which was how laptopvideo2go was born as we were a bunch of people who were on Dell's Community Forums who were replacing our NVidia GeForce GPU Cards with the Quadro cards since the Inspiron 8200 was basically the same motherboard as the Latitude C840 and Precision Workstation M60's, same reason I was the first one to get 4GB of RAM when the specs is 2GB of RAM but the m60 I believe was sold with a 4GB maximum configuration. So we are basically talking of two different things as performance is where you are correct but then there is also the warranty and OEM support issue should something go wrong which would favor the OEM drivers as you never know if the hardware provided by the OEM was junk to begin with and if even their own drivers fail, then at least one can use it in their own favor but if you use the generic drivers and assuming you were in a situation where you are unable to get it back to OEM drivers so they will support you, then that could be a problem as the OEMs will look for all ways to blame it on the end user so they do not have to provide support and claim the warranty is void which is money saved for them.

In the 6 years that I have owned this machine, I had never used OEM drivers and only the latest from NVIDIA as soon as it's available but I can tell you that witḣ 581.08 which uses the Intel CPU's GPU first, 581.08 has already GSOD twice as the driver name shown on the screen has NVIDIA and DX in the name. The firstţone was part of the session of installing 581.08 and the second one was after forcing a shutoff from the GSOD and then after a few hours, I logged in and within 10-20 minutes, it did the GSOD. I've only seen GSOD's for NVIDIA with one version of the driver maybe a few times when Windows 11 RTM first was available but never again after I went Beta Insiders.

Yes, the driver did not install the first time, I had to restart the computer and repeat the installation. This is the first time this has happened in the last few years. But there was no GSOD.

I never had a GSOD installing the driver, but 581.08 still fails to install on Canary Builds.
I have no problem with any other Windows 11 Build.
To install on Canary, I have to do it while connected with RDC and bypass the black screen problem. 🤷‍♂️

1. Ordinary installation. Not tired.
2. I indicated a clean installation. The old driver Nvidia retired and the VGA driver appeared.
3. I rebooted the computer and again tried to install. Established.

The log did not look.

Still problem of black screen installing on Canary Build with driver 581.15. No problems with other windows 11 Builds.
On Canary I had to install while connected with RDC to bypass the problem again.

You know I have not had issues installing on any Canary flights.
I do have a RTX 4060 though.

I had the same problem on several Canary Builds including the latest 27928. Two different machines with RTX 2060 and RTX 3060
No problem with any other 24H2 or 25H2 builds and the same hardware. 🤷‍♂️

I've long since learned that when selecting drivers for video cards one is best off going directly to the manufacturer of that card to get them. What I'm trying to say is that if you have an NVIDIA card by ASUS don't go to NVIDIA for your drivers. Go to ASUS. IF you have an NVIDIA card by MSI go to MSI for the drivers. Generic drivers only work so much. Proprietary video cards require proprietary drivers. Likewise it is the same with AMD graphics cards. You may have to wait longer to get the correct proprietary drivers but the wait is worth it.

Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
NVIDIA support stated that they don't test the drivers on Windows insider builds.
It is up to Microsoft to make sure that the drivers can be installed properly with the windows 11 insider builds.
