Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware

MicroSoft installed Windows 11 21H2 (OS Build: 22000.194). Now I am unable to get the latest Windows 11 released on 4th October to upgrade my Laptop
22000.194 is the latest Windows 11 that was released on 4th October. The ISO's for the RTM release of 22000.194 and the Insider Preview of 22000.194 are identical and have the same checksum.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

My Laptop did not meet the criterion for in stalling Windows 11 because of the Laptop CPU.
If you are determined you want/need 11 there is a way round this and it is well documented - fairly simple and straightforward.

Whether the 'hack' is blocked in the future by MS is a wait and see game and nope MS is a business and it's all about $$'s. Like many that are running incompatible hardware but wish to stay with Win10, there is now a message posted under updates about your PC does not meet the minimums etc for Win11. The start of some subtle pushing by MS to get folks to go and spend hard earned cash.

Still waiting for what? The release version is .194 so if you have that then there's nothing to upgrade to
Oh. I though MS released a new build for the official one? Im actually in the 194 preview build or something.

If your CPU is the only impediment left now then perhaps MicroSoft shall also send you the 21H2 upgrade like they had sent to me to upgrade to Windows 11 if you become a Windows Insider on your Windows 10 ASUS. Good Luck.

i7-7700k - you shouldn't have to bin that. I've gone to 11 on my spare rig running an i7 7xxx so will be interesting if it updates okay but so far so good although the UI is a personal preference and on my main main PC which is compatible it's staying with 10.

Welcome. You'll find this a good place to be.

I'm running an i7-7700, too, and I am extremely happy with the way 11 (194) is running on this, my main PC. I'm getting a new (actually a couple of years old: couldn't spring for a 2021 model atm) PC on Monday that passes the MS criteria list, but I'm going to keep the present PC on 11 until we see how the update thingy is going to go. If the only hurdle turns out to be that we have to get our updates from the MS Update Catalog, that's no problem at all. This forum will announce the availability of updates from the catalog as they are posted to the catalog. Your i7-7700 should only be hours behind the PCs that got their updates through WU.

That's a good point. I'll probably wait to hear how it goes on here (including you), but can download the Media Creation Tool and have the .iso waiting. I looked at Windows Insider but it says, at least on my machine, that it would only upgrade with Windows 10.

I'm going to be keeping an eye on threads like this as well; my Skylake system more than meets Microsoft's other requirements for Win 11 the exception being the 6700K processor. The more I use Win 11 the more I like it and if other's experiences with unsupported processors are reasonable i.e. able to manually download updates, I may upgrade the Skylake system as well.

For our new posters, I remind that for new Windows 11 installation I used successfully a Windows 10 USB with the Install.wim (or install.esd) file into the sources folder replaced with the respective file from latest Windows 11 ISO. For upgrade from Windows 10 or an older Windows 11 build to the last Windows 11 build, I used successfully the method of loading Setup and then delete the appropriate file from the cache before proceeding to bypass compatibility check. All earlier Windows 64-bit drivers (10, 8, 7, Vista) also work in Windows 11 with the exception of some Intel graphics drivers that work only in Windows 7.

I think Ms's processor requirements are far too rigid for the moment unless W11 will incorporate newer processor instructions not available on older models.

For the life of me I can't understand why anybody who'se not an extreme gamer and doesn't run totally bonkers things on Windows can't use any i5/i7 processor or even some i3 models (plus equivalent AMD CPU's). Home systems don't need military level security either although more security (unless it's too extreme) is never a bad idea..

I think W11 is fine (so far) -- but releasing it while W10 still has 4 years to run -- seems a bit bonkers too -- 4 years is almost a geological age in hardware (and even software) terms. Whose not betting on probably equivalent to Windows 14 by then !!! or at least a Windows 12.

VM's of course work perfectly (currently) even on BIOS non UEFI machines - however some don't want to go down that route.

I can get W11 running in a VM on a machine that can't even upgrade W10 from the old 1803 build !!!! I gave up even thinking about installing W10 on that machine. Always BSOD'd with "Missing boot device" or some message like that. !Installed alternative OS with VM to get W11 which performs very well indeed.

Judging by contributors to this thread - it looks like that W11 will be able to run on all sorts of hardware whatever the thinking is at Ms. !!! Great stuff by all.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi,
Processor list I'm guessing revolves around mother board support eol time.

If a manufacture doesn't provide a bios update people are screwed
If they have and can find a tpm 1.2 or 2.0 chip but still no bios setting ms offered a way to install 11 and ignore the cpu list.
Third parties have provided ways to install or upgrade ignoring all current 11 requirements

Not any money for manufacture to offer bios updates is the real problem
They drop support after three years period.

On my Z170 Pro (not Gaming) motherboard, Asus' last BIOS update was in April of 2018 which I've had on the machine since then, but the Trusted Computing setting to enable TPM was nowhere to be found despite trying to enable everything else to get it to appear. I bought and installed a 2.0 TPM module and the setting then appeared in the BIOS settings. I know Asus released a BIOS for some other older boards so this setting could be enabled but for this board they did not so it came to as you say, finding a TPM chip.

My Asus Z170-P does have the TPM setting in the 2018 bios, mine was from May 2018, somewhat odd why the Pro doesn't though. May be related to the fact that the TPM header wasn't actually fitted to the 170-P just the empty pinouts labelled TPM.

I looked up the manual for your Z170-P online and it is missing a page that the Z170 Pro has in its manual concerning the installation of a TPM module; so I'd say you're correct about the Z170 Pro not getting a BIOS update for firmware TPM because Asus figured the owner of the Z170 Pro board can get themselves a module to enable it. Pity anyone with a board that only has an empty space where the TPM module would go, and no BIOS update to enable the security in firmware.

My impression (from a Lenovo response to a request for the date-of-manufacture of a desktop's serial number) is that 2018 was a volatile year for manufacturers, and machines built after September 2018 are more likely to have all of the MS specs than those built September and before. I haven't seen that anywhere other than in private correspondence, and you never know whether the correspondent is reliable when you get such information. Nevertheless, interesting, if taken with the proverbial grain.

Interesting, and perhaps helps explain the differences in these boards concerning TPM.
