Let's install Windows 11 on incompatible hardware


Another issue since updates today. Extra/double blank icons in menu.

Plus can't copy and paste (or open) photos from iphone. Initially it was an error message but now they don't display at all as photos (they are jpegs). Although hadn't actually tried to transfer photos from iphone before so that may have already been an issue before today's updates.

In W10, you right-clicked the taskbar and got a pop-up menu that included Task Manager, and you left-clicked that to get Task Manager. Two clicks: one right and one left.

Now in W11, you can open Windows Tools, right click Task Manager, and select Pin to Taskbar (not to Start). Then, if you right-click the Task Manager icon, you get a pop-up that offers Task Manager, and if you left-click that, you'll have Task Manager. Two clicks: one right, one left. Same sequence, just a different click-target (the icon, instead of the whole task bar).

Or, you can just left-click the icon and you're in Task Manager.

I think the right-left sequence on the icon is as close as you're going to get to the W10 right-left sequence. (At least for now. At least without some third-party add-on.)

Classic Start Menu doesn't work on Windows 11, the same with Classic Shell or Open Shell which also add customization to Windows Explorer. Customization of Windows Explorer (cut-copy-paste icons etc) works, but not for the taskbar.

Beware of Windows Update replacing your drivers! A few minutes earlier I had a small HP notebook that was crawling on the internet and frequently disconnecting because Windows Update had replaced the Intel 5100 AGN wireless driver with a generic Microsoft driver. I could not even connect to Intel's site to download the proper driver. I connected from another computer and downloaded the latest official Intel 5100 AGN driver for Windows 64-bit. Then I used a USB flash drive to transfer the driver to the notebook. To make sure the correct driver was installed, I didn't run setup, but I extracted the files to a folder and then went in Device Manager and manually replaced the faulty driver with the files from the folder. Running Setup might decide you already have the best driver and not replace it. The only way to make sure it is replaced is by manually forcing it from Device Manager. After this internet was super fast and never disconnected again. That's why I prefer manually download latest drivers from manufacturer rather than rely entirely on Windows Update.

You have made a very important and valid point that one should install the drivers from original maker instead of using a Microsoft generic driver. I keep my drivers updated by using a driver updating App that gets the latest drivers from the original manufacturer. Have you tried any such Apps?
