Windows 11 Pro 21H2 64-bit (build 22000.978)
To see your Windows version press Win+R to open the Run window and run the command winver. In my laptop I upgraded from 21H2 build 22000.978 to build 22000.1042 before unsuccessfully trying to upgrade to 22H2. I am not sure if uninstalling the latest cumulative update to go back to 22000.978 would then succeed in upgrading to 22H2. I don't have time to check it. Anyone successfully upgraded an unsupported computer from 21H2 22000.978 (or earlier build) directly to 22H2? What are your specs?

At first I was thinking of doing a clean install on this #437 old machine. But I ended up doing the In-place Upgrade. Everything works. I made the installation media with rufus. Now we just wait for the next version update and see if Microsoft makes any changes. :-)

The message contained a link to an earlier post on this thread with information about this pc. But here they are again. :-) I haven't marked them separately in that section of "my computer", as I don't use this pc at all otherwise. I'm just checking how the updates work. Build was propably 21H2 22000.1042. But I'm not entirely sure, I didn't check.

Possibly up to three things, definitely at least the last one.

First, you must disconnect from the internet before attempting to upgrade an unsupported device to 22H2.
Second, you must choose how Setup checks for updates as 'not for now'.
Last, you do not delete appraserres.dll, it must be replaced with a dummy file of zero length. Make a 'New Text Document' on your desktop, rename it, and put that in place of the original one.

I have now successfully upgraded two unsupported devices with a 22H2 ISO made by the Media Creation Tool, and am currently upgraidng my third and last one.
@Bree, the file name is appraiserres.dll and not appraserres.dll

Bree, the file name is appraiserres.dll and not appraserres.dll
Thanks, corrected now. I'm always having trouble spelling that correctly. Yesterday I even got it wrong three times in a row while trying to upgrade one of my unsupported devices!

I think I did it! First I tried to uninstall the latest cumulative update to return to build 22000.978, but there was no uninstall button for that update, so I started with build 22000.1042. I then cleaned up the disk again and this time I also moved the Windows ISO from downloads to the SD card. This freed about 5GB so the total free disk space was over 15GB. I then mounted the ISO and started Setup. Before proceeding I replaced the appraiserres.dll file with an empty dummy and also disabled Windows updates during installation. I also disabled Windows Defender just in case it interferes with the process. This time it successfully copied all setup files to disk and restarted to proceed installing Windows 11. All I have to do now is wait for the update to complete and then report the success. Fingers crossed...
This is on my Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 hybrid laptop/tablet with 4th generation Intel Core-i5, 4GB RAM.

I'm letting my non-compatible computer stew on Windows 11 Home x64 Version 21H2 Build 22000.978 just to see if there's any WU action at all.
My non-compatible System Two is stewing at 11 Pro version 22H2, 22621.382 now, with the KB5017321 .521 CU consistently failing with error 0x800f0806.....
I'll leave it stewing like this to see if MS fix it at their end or, as is more usual, leave it as it is until it's superseded by a newer CU.
Well, things have changed this morning. The changes must be at the MS side, as I have changed nothing here.

I have been regularly clicking 'Check for updates'. All other updates such as intelligence updates have downloaded and installed normally, but not the 22621.521 CU.

This morning that changed. First Windows Update downloaded and installed KB5016632, the CU for 22621.382. This of course did not ask for a restart as it was already on 22621.382 from the in-place upgrade.

I checked for updates again and it successfully found, downloaded and installed KB5017321.

1664010410374.png

1664011518453.png

I had wondered if this could be the first ever case of an update being withheld for unsupported devices. I tested that by clean installing 22H2 RTM in a fully supported VM while offline, so it wouldn't be able to check for updates and be a 22621.382 install. That too had exactly the same 0x800f0806 download error. So no, it must have been a fault on the update servers that's been corrected now.

I successfully upgraded my Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 hybrid laptop/tablet (4th generation Intel Core-i5, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics, UEFI installation, no TPM 2.0, Secure Boot disabled). As I said in my previous post I couldn't downgrade from build 22000.1042 to 22000.978, so I tried the upgrade anyway. More details later.

OS
Windows 11 Pro 21H2 64-bit (build 22000.978)
I successfully upgraded my Fujitsu Stylistic Q702 hybrid laptop/tablet (4th generation Intel Core-i5, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics, UEFI installation, no TPM 2.0, Secure Boot disabled). As I said in my previous post, I couldn't downgrade from build 22000.1042 to 22000.978, so I tried the upgrade anyway starting with latest 21H2 build 22000.1042 (no more updates available). Since my Fujitsu is unsupported, I wasn't offered the upgrade to 22H2 through Windows Update, so I manually downloaded the latest Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft's official download site: Download Windows 11 I didn't use the MCT, just downloaded the ISO directly from the third option.

Before starting, to make sure nothing would interfere with the upgrade and interrupt the process, I disabled all non-Microsoft services and all startup applications. I also disabled Windows Defender and disconnected from the internet just in case. I moved the ISO to the SD card and cleaned up my hard disk so I had over 15GB free disk space to begin with (it is a 64GB SSD that cannot be replaced :().

I mounted the ISO, clicked on the message to change how Windows will handle updates and selected to NOT update during setup (I was offline anyway but I also selected NO just to be on the safe side). Before proceeding I created an empty text file and renamed it to appraiserres.dll so I could replace the original C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\appraiserres.dll file with this dummy file. This is to bypass compatibility check and let you upgrade from Windows 10 to 11 or in this case from an old build to the new. I then continued Setup which never complained about compatibility and completed as normal!

As with every upgrade to a new version any customization (icons etc) was lost and I had to redo it. After doing all my customizations again, I now have the latest Windows 11 version 22H2 build 22621.521 with Windows 8.1 system icons and Windows 7 style start button and start menu. I even changed the Windows logo in the classic System Properties and About Windows as can be seen in the following photos.

Windows 11 Pro 21H2 64-bit (build 22000.978)
I now started the upgrade on my main computer (see my 2nd system specs). I did all the available updates up to build 22000.1042 Since this also is an unsupported computer, I wasn't offered the upgrade through Windows Update. I manually downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and mounted it to do the upgrade. I disabled all non-Microsoft services and all startup applications. I also disconnected from the internet just in case. I go to bed as local time is 1:30am and I will report in the morning. Fingers crossed...

My non compliant laptop was not offered 22H2 so I updated it via the MS ISO. During the install it looked for updates and it now has .561 with no apparent problems.

No image restore required!! This is a 'sitting at couch' lappie so no real data on it anyway.

I've run out of unsupported devices to try W11 on

Most are now dual booting their original W10 with W11 22H2 as a native boot .vhdx.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022.

My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB ssd, Windows 11 Pro.

My SYSTEM FOUR is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e 20DA, Celeron N2930, 4GB RAM, 128GB ssd. Unsupported device: currently running Win10 Pro, plus Win11 Pro 22H2 RTM as a native boot vhdx.

I might lend my test laptop (see my 1st system specs) to a friend. If I can avoid it and keep it eventually, I will upgrade it next from 21H2 to 22H2 and report. I will also upgrade my father's Pentium Gxxxx desktop computer and let you know.
