The graphics driver was the issue on initial install - there wasn't one. I installed a vista 64 bit one for gma 3150. To be fair it shouldn't really be working at all lol. But it runs really well! It just doesn't do colour where it should. I did manage to apply some manual colours - it works in some areas but not others. So it makes it slightly harder to use (for example "Paint" is entirely grey so icons harder to see). Anyway as I can't complain as the fact that it even runs on an atom netbook is amazing. I just wondered though, whether it was to do with the graphics/graphics driver, or whether it was to do with the rufus legacy install. I guess the only way to tell would be to use the rufus legacy install on a machine that does get a graphics driver installed by Windows.

I would try using an older Vista 64 driver (assuming you installed the last). I would also try the generic WDDM driver from Windows Update. I wouldn't expect any better performance from the Vista driver anyway...

Compatibility hint: Screen flickering when opening Settings and how to stop it.

Recently I saw a weird incompatibility at an old laptop with nVidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics. Everywhere else the screen was stable, it passed Burnin Test, played video and games without any issue. But when I tried to access Windows Settings, any section, Display Settings, Personalization, Windows Update, the screen flickered after a few seconds and I could do nothing. This flickering stopped when replacing the nVidia drivers with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter (no acceleration). No nVidia driver would fix the issue, neither official Windows 7 driver, nor the one from Windows Update. So first I thought the graphics card had been damaged and needed repair (airflow). But when I disabled transparency in Personalization the issue disappeared! It seems that the graphics card could not render the transparency effects properly causing the flicker. Once the transparency effects is disabled, everything is OK. So if you experience something similar, try disabling transparency effects. This was in Windows 10, but I am sure it also applies in Windows 11.

Surprise to see that W11 runs on a single core Pentium 4 661. I thought the dual core requirement had technical reasons, but obviously not.

Where did you see Pentium 4? It is probably some of the 64-bit models (Pentium 4 6xx series, socket 775) or newer. But I doubt these models feature the required instructions to run Windows 8 64-bit or higher. You probably confused it with some other newer Intel model.

It looks like first Intel 64-bit CPUs have the necessary instructions to run Windows 8 or newer 64-bit, while first 64-bit AMD models can only run up to Windows 7 64-bit due to missing the instructions! Intel wins

This is the earliest CPU I have seen Windows 11 installed. Anyone can beat that?

I would also do the following test: Use 2GB RAM to install Windows 11 and then reduce it to 512MB. It should take long to load Windows, but in theory it works. Below that, no way.

Compare with: Minimum RAM to install Windows 7 32-bit: 384MB, Minimum RAM to load Windows 7 32-bit: 256MB, Minimum RAM to upgrade Windows NT 4.0 to Windows XP: 64MB, Minimum RAM to load XP after installation: 32MB. Yes, I'm crazy...

Could have been wrong link and wrong year. There was no Pentium in 2016.
The Pentium G series superseded the classic Pentium LGA775 since 2010.
However, there was no Pentium G released in 2016

Installed windows 11 with rufus on acer aspire 5535. Legacy Bios, 2Gb DDR2 memory and Athlon 1.9 GHz processor.

Everything works well. :)

A question about graphics drivers. I know that Windows 10 installed a gma 3150 wddm 1.0 driver onto the Asus netbook. Yet no driver found when installing Windows 11 and I installed the Vista 64 bit one. I have another netbook with the same processor on windows 10. Has the wddm windows driver. Now I assume that driver is only for 32 bit hence Windows not installing it in Windows 11. And that there is no 64 bit 3150 or wddm - other than the vista one.

But is there anyway of extracting that driver from the windows 10 install and trying it in windows 11? I thought I had found a download for it on Microsoft update (which announced it was an unsafe download by Defender!). But it just failed and said not suitable for this hardware.

Anyway - probably just answered my own question there - it’s probably just a 32 bit only driver (although I am sure the downloaded one has 64 snd 32 in the files).

Looked it up. It’s version 8.15.10.2697 provided by Intel and it says for XP, 7, Vista, 8.1 and Windows 10 32 bit and 64 bit.

Just need to find somewhere else to download it from then.
