@Try3, If I remember Microsoft recommends you install in 32-bit if you use older apps as 64-bit may make some things incompatible.

Just something to think about.

Virtually every house/pub in uk has wifi thse days, our mobiles can access cloud.

About the only time I cannot get easy access to cloud is if I am on holiday in some remote location, and then who cares LOL.

I would use cloud as my prime backup if it was not for the fact that UKs telecom infrastructure is a decade behind other G8 countries and broadband spreeds are at 30 to 70 mb/s (mbits) for vast majority. So physical backup is the only practical option.

Some are lucky to get much better true fibre speeds but I would be surprised if this was more than 5% of users in UK.

The irony is the integrated telecom structure meant we had a very rapid uptake of broadband but our system is just not geared up to the massive redevelopment needed to keep up with other countries.

I think we will end up with superfast local wifi from local fibre cabinets in time, bypassing the copper wire limitations. Of course we may all get frazzled LOL.

@cereberus The cloud is useless to me except for small files. I live 3 miles from the city limits, operate on 5 Mbps, and am lucky to get that most times as bandwidth from my isp is shared. The only place in Texas the money is being spent on upgrading infrastructure is in metropolitan areas. Out in rural towns the only communities getting fiber are the 'upper class' ones. Backing up my system in the cloud would be a futile effort because my upload speed is 1.0 Mbps.

I stopped using MS office several years ago when I bought it from a 'company' who also supplied the key, until MS found it and crashed it out of existence as fake. Since then I have used Open Office and, since moving to Win 11, Libre Office because Open Office 'was no longer supported' ????

I blasted that company address all over my web sites and they moved, same Co different address (UK). They used a hacker software to generate the keys. MS said sod off, pay again. No way Jose.

I loved to watch Lone Star Law (Game Wardens) (Discovery ) it was a great documentary series but it showed that most Texicans, outside of major towns like in shacks, tumbledown homesteads etc. No wonder cable companies wont commit funds.

LOL. Don't you believe it. We built outside the city 38 years ago before it became a trend for everyone else. Now, everyone wants to have 'space' and in Texas there's a lot of that. Even in our area the houses being built are huge. We're 100 miles from Dallas and the closer you get to it, the houses get even bigger.

Fortunately you had alternatives that worked for you.

It's not Microsoft's fault they told you to buy another key. The 3rd party scammed you on a key, it wasn't a legit key.

A Couple of friends I have who live in Beverley E.Yorks seem to be getting decent fibre at around 1 Gb/s - supplied by some telco operating in Kingston upon Hull -- hardly the richest area of the UK - so if that city and surrounding area gets decent high speed Internet I'm sure it shoudn't be hard to "Fibre up" most of the UK. After all without getting too much into politics they are spending almost an obscene or certainly an insane amount of money building a 210 km strech of railway line that will be redundant and certainly obsolete long before it even gets a single passenger so the money is obviously available -- would cost a fraction of that piece of railway engineering !!!¬!

I believe the other telco B.T is known as the Bovine excrement telco !!!

Parts of London though (finally) can get up to 3gbps now.according to this :

No - it is simply a matter of access to buildings - virtually all copper wire goes via convoluted routes underground, and in houses in brick wall cavities (nearly all buildings in uk are double brick wall design). They would have to install it like satellite dishes i.e. drill through double cavity, and tear up just about every road in a conurbation area. There is talk about threading fibre by the water pipes but even that is difficult.

Basically, the upgrade costs are just too high, especially as most (90+% I suspect) people meet their needs with moderate 30-70 mbits/second, and will not pay for the extra costs of getting higher speeds.

5G also a great idea - that should be much easier to implement too but has anybody "Load / Stress" tested it yet -- 5G on phones can give incredible speed currently when only a minority have it - but under full load with servers and desktops running all sorts of things people don't usually do on their phones might bring another whole set of problems. Remember also in a lot of places (inside the UK and beyond) often don't have unlimited bandwidth tariff's for their 5G customers - that's a must these days with Internet and high quality video streaming.

If 5G is so suitable for "Mainline Internet" I wonder why fibre was even rolled out as surely as you say the work involved in some places is horrendous - but even today there's barely any discussion of 5G for general Internet use. A Fibre optic cable has almost an unlimited bandwidth capacity so nr of simultaneous customers on it hardly effects the ISP contract agreed speed you are paying for.

I do not see it is any different really to local wifi masts feeding thousands of phones as we have at present. The fundamental technology exists.

A termination cabinet could have loads of "modems" - it is only a question of scale. Maybe a few years away yet but what we have now is far advanced than 10 years ago.

Ahh Kingston on Hull been doing their own thing since 1904, Kingston Communications, now KCOM was owned by the Council for a long time. Used to be problematic back in dial-up days as they were the only option as have never had any BT landlines, thus you were restricted to whatever Kingston offered and still are, ISPs like AOL, Freeserve, Demon and so on were not available back in early Dial-up days, frequent question on a forum I used back in those days was why can't I have xxx ISP in Kingston on Hull. I seem to recall that their Dial-up was apparently infinitely better than anywhere else at the time though.

I think Birmingham (UK not Alabama) had also its own telco systems for a while but with so much concrete around (Bull ring and motorways like crazy going nearly everywhere in the city) any sort of decent internet was probably way beyond technology available in those days. I think much to the relief of its residents most of that concrete has been demolished -- Who on earth paid the planners in that era --even old Soviet Brutalist architecture was better than some of that 1960's stuff -- I remember well as a Student at Imperial College in London in the late 1970's thinking who'd even think of living in some of those "New high rise builds".

Still people there have an almost incomprehensible accent (amazing how many different regions of UK have totally different accents) and a canal system now restored and "Tourist friendly again" which is bigger than Venice and possibly bigger than Amsterdam and Venice combined --don't know if that's true though -- maybe a "Brummie" can answer that one for us.

Still if you want a bit of great history and optimism have a look at a program on BBC iPlayer (also available via VPN for overseas audiences) on the "1951 Festival of Britain" -- brilliant forward looking documentary after war years (WWII) and depression in that country -- and if you follow it through the people who hated the idea most were probably the politicians of a party you would not probably guess at -- and its name doesn't start with an "L" either.

Was in Wolverhampton as well until Virgin took over and made a mess in my Street relaying the cables, that seemed take forever.

Saw that Festival of Britain documentary a while back, think it was on one of the many other channels that show old documentaries was quite interesting and well worth a look.
