  1. I am logged into my machine using a Microsoft account. [email protected]
  2. I have activated Settings/Accounts / Sign in with a local account instead/ [Next]
  3. Windows Security window is asking me for a PIN associated, not with the account I’m signed in under,
    but a totally different Microsoft Account of mine. [email protected]
  4. I have been able to get to [email protected], even able to change its password. But there seems to be no way to assign it a PIN!
    It seems Microsoft has managed to confuse one Microsoft Account ([email protected]) with another ([email protected]) so badly that I’m in a terrible bind.

How can I assign [email protected] a PIN so that I can complete my “Sign in with a local account”
  1. Note: I cannot resort to using the “I forgot my PIN” because engaging that link puts me into a situation where I’m forced to change the PIN associated with [email protected]

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Dev, and Canary builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

To be short, this is by your own hand. Such an array of self inflicted complications, I have never seen.

You should just install Windows and leave it alone, J-Man. But you can’t help yourself.
All that work that was done for you by Lady, burned to the ground.

Why do you want to switch to a local account?

Everyone hang tight here. I am in the process of preparing a post (will probably be tomorrow) explaining all that is involved and what he wants to accomplish. The issue with pin has been resolved but he has other issues that are very detailed. It will take me some time to lay out the full picture of his current situation.

The OP is going to be out of commission for a few days. I was going to try to explain his situation and my plan for taking care of it and run it by y'all because he wanted your input. But it was left undecided as to whether he wanted to give his own explanation. So guess I will leave this until he gets back in action and we'll see what happens..

He probably used the other Microsoft Account to register some Windows app or game. He can try removing the other Microsoft account before creating a PIN. The installed apps or games should not be affected. They will probably ask to sign in again, this time using the first Microsoft account. Thankfully Microsoft is not Apple. If you install anything from Apple Store with a different Apple ID (aka iCloud account), and remove the account, you cannot use it! You have to uninstall it and reinstall using the current account! Very inconvenient if you give your iPad or iPhone to a relative and sign out of your account. They have to uninstall and reinstall all the apps and games they want to use, including the free ones!

PS: I know some smart guy will read this and rush to say this is not the case. Well, I don't know about iOS 13+, but it IS the case for older versions.
