I'm on a four-PC home network, with two or three active at any time. I often have to move or copy files from my main box to one or more of the others.

Here's the question: When I use Move to/Copy to within one PC, Windows remembers what the target folder was for the file transfer, and the next time I click Move to/Copy to, Windows shows the last target, pre-selected. But when I have to Move to/Copy to and the destination is another machine on my home network, the next time I transfer anything, Windows still shows the previous intra-PC destination pre-selected, not the last network destination.

Is there any way to change that so that Windows remembers network destinations?

When I use Move to/Copy to within one PC,
I have lost files using the Move option. Because of that, I now use copy and paste. After I know the file copied ok, I'll delete the old file.

Weeeeell, dangit, I hadn't even thought of that. It works beautifully. All I have to do is drag and drop; no multiple clicks, and no fumbling.

Thanks, OAT. I'll mark this Solved. The image shows one of the target folders on one of the other machines.

Interesting, since Move is just computer-speak for Copy, Paste, Delete, in that order. It's all the same to the computer.

Not really. When you copy and paste a file, the original stays where it's at. If you move the file and something goes wrong before it finishes, the file can get corrupted or deleted.

True. Using Move in Windows Explorer deletes the file immediately after the copy part completes, without checking for verification. Other file managers handle it much more robustly, including file verification *before* deleting the original source.

Sure wish Windows did that natively.

I've lost a few files using the Move option. Luckily, they weren't very important..

I stand corrected. I truly thought the Windows method was 1) copy, 2) paste, and then, unless there was an error in the paste operation, 3) delete. I wonder whether it worked that way forty years ago, when I learned about it??

@OAT

These mapped network drives have been a learning experience for me. I never knew they had anything interesting to offer me, so I guess I never tried them.

Now I've discovered the Send To in the context menu includes the mapped target folders as well. Happy camper, me.

Thanks for pushing me to try this as a solution to my annoyance.

Dan

Interesting, since Move is just computer-speak for Copy, Paste, Delete, in that order. It's all the same to the computer.
Try to avoid "Move To" especially if you are moving from one machine to another and if you are moving big files. A small issue with network connection can cause file corruption and loss of data.

Thanks for that advice. I'll take it to heart. Fortunately, with my target folders mapped, I can quickly copy to them, and then delete my original, if I wish. Yes.

It's the same with "Cut and Paste". But for text files, pdf or small images, it should be fine. But try not to do it with folders.

Or any files that are critical in any sort of way - even small document files.

Once you lose them, your day goes to pot.

Unless I don't care about losing the files, I always use copy and paste.
