I'm thinking more in line with the user who basically only knows how to turn on their computer. When setting up a new computer the user has to answer a few questions before they get to the desktop. What username do you want to use should be one of the questions.

I may be completely off base here but the username is the full Microsoft account. It wouldn't make sense to ask them what username do they want to use, unless you are talking about what they want the user directory to be called? Id so would most non-techie people understand what that question meant?

The User name is the name you want to use when logged in. It's the name you see when you go to C:\Users\Your user name. I want my name and not the first five characters of the email I used to setup my MS account. For example I would prefer my user name to be Winuser instead of Winus.

I must disagree. Microsoft should ask you what you want your user name to be, just like they currently ask what you want to name your computer. Then after you enter a user name (John in may case), they should ask you what Microsoft account you want to login with (if any). On my Windows 11 installation, I added a local account first, John, then I attached a Microsoft account to it. If I did not create the local account first, my user name would not be John, it would be johnh - and that would just, politely, upset me.

Cannot see the problem by having a Microsoft account I have had one in both Windows 10 and 11 and maybe I am missing something when all this mandatory stuff started up. Personally I believe that they know what you are doing with your systems anyway

I don't have a problem having a Microsoft account. I do have a problem Microsoft telling me that my user name has to be johnh

Having an MSA is one thing being forced to have an online account is another.

An MSA = telemetry = $$$$ for MS.

Forcing an MSA is akin to extortion - I won't have it.

But you have to appreciate that MS allows you to use any email for your MSA.
Though I would not recommend it, onedrive will not work it, neither will other stuff.

Hi,
Not much different from local account telemetry is there and sent so they make the same money selling/ using usage as a ms account

Only difference is the big $$$$ items like xbox app more onedrive storage/ maybe new office subscriptions stuff but these are still very optional.

Biggest difference and deal breakers for me in the two accounts is all the password/ phone #/ pin code/... juggling it's just not worth the bother
I get enough spam text messages/ emails as it is.

Granted... telemetry is not linked to the domain of the email address.. it just grates me the way they coerce people into things that is only in their best interests. An online account will most likely provide them with more telemetry though - be it via social media or whatever...

Then why would they enforce MSA? If they are getting sufficient telemetry with local accounts? It goes a lot deeper than we think- Google didn't make their billions without reason.

I like short local account names e.g. C for Cereberus. I have always wondered if you can get an email like e.g. C.google.com say but I suppose google would not allow it, or they are like personal number plates and you would need to be a zillionaire to own such an email address LOL.

Knowing MS, even if they did allow you to add your own local account name, it would probably require 8 letters of which one is upper case, one is a number, one is a character like #, one would require an accented letter e.g. ē, and of course 2 different emojis (also of different emotion groups), and then in the BLOG, they would say "Hey we listened but for security we require.......”!
