Microsoft's upcoming change could block off Windows 11 CPU requirements bypass on old PCs


On this Dell Optiplex 960 desktop, when I ran CPU-Z, it showed that the installed CPU was the Wolfdale which only supports SSE4.1. I looked it up and the next processor that Intel launched, Nehalene in 2008, came out with the revised architecture supporting SSE4.2 (PopCnt). Anything after Wolfdale is good to go on PopCnt.

Yes, if you have SSE4.2 then you will also have the PopCnt instruction that 24H2 requires, it's part of the same package.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I just checked on 7th Gen a Marcium reload will kill Canary build 24h2

Could you rephrase that? I'm unsure what you mean.

(An Intel Gen7 CPU supports SSE 4.2, which means that it won't break under 24H2.)

Pretty much, If anyone has an issue with it..its kinda on them for running obsolete/ majorly dated hardware.
For example. See if windows 12 came out...and i didn't meet the spec...i wouldn't be too surprised as im already on a nearly 4 year cpu, lets say 12 takes another 2 years, thats 6 years. Thats a me problem for old af hardware. I know were talking about win 11 requirements but none the less, Dont be surprised if you're 8-20 year old cpu wont do.

Think the more interesting is tpm and secure boot so called "Must Support" parts seeing this can likely mean enabled not just capable lol so this alone will stop me from bothering with 24h2 if MS throws error fit after mounting with rufus disabling those requirements hehe

That and I've read MS might push VM security so virtualization features in bios will also need to be enabled for that to happen if not MS can't enable vm security.

But then again MS is insisting people have the newest bios so all these items will likely be enabled by default.

My z490 newest bios did lock tpm on I did not notice if VM features secure boot were also locked though.

I have a Dell 7090/10th gen cpu, for running Windows 11/working from Home.
I have various Dell Precision 5810s/5610s for running Linux.
Personally, think if your machine:
  • Doesn't have native NVME/bifurcation support,
  • Does not have TPM1.2,
It is obviously archaic, so is waste of time/effort, attempting to run Windows 11, when machines with 8th Gen CPU, are so cheap.

For a giggle today, I created Win11 23H2 usb using Rufus, and installed it on 5810 (TPM2), with Xeon 2680 v4.
No issues, no headache.
Was just a proof of concept, and would only be used for installing BIOS/firmware updates.

My Trend Micro says the CPU-Z install is trying to install in a protected folder and that it is unsafe. Anyone else having this issue or problems after installing this?
Edit: Never mind. I was trying to install it to a OneDrive folder by mistake. After creating a folder on my C drive for it, the application worked fine, and the good news is my 11 year old Asus with Intel Ivy Bridge has SSE4.2.

That gets annoying.

That's why I use the portable version, no install just unzip to a folder. cpu-z_2.08-en.zip

But there are some 64-bit programs that put a marker in the Program Files (x86) folder, e.g. Internet Explorer [which only calls up Edge] is in both.
