Moving C:\Users to drive root (U:\)

Windows 11
I need to know how to install Windows 11, in which, the C:\Users directory is the root of another drive such as U:\. Similar to placing Linux $home directory on a different physical mount. This is a fresh install on a new motherboard (ASUS WS PRO WRX80E-SAGE).

I attempted to use an unattended answer file, but the windows 11 install hangs after running "sysprep /oobe /reboot /unattend:z:relocate.xml" and restarting. After a forced restart the error message telling me that "Windows failed to install... Restart and try to install again".

NOTE:*** I renamed all drives manually so that U:\ existed, and the relocate.xml file was located on/at Z:\.

I am following these instructions:
I did this for my Windows 10 Pro setup and it worked flawlessly for 10 years. The only difference this time is that I want C:\Users to be replaced with drive root (U:\). Last time it was C:\Users to U:\Users!

Can anyone confirm that C:\Users can be renamed to the root of another drive? or does the "Users" folder have to exist?

Thank you

If I understand correctly, you want to use another partition for the user files. I would create all the relevant folders in the U: drive, such as Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos etc. Then open the user folder and right-click each other folder, select Properties, go to Location and click on Move. Then browse at the respective folder. I don't know if your data are moved automatically, but you can always cut-paste them from the original folders. That's it.

PS: To avoid any issues, move only specific folders, don't mess with hidden system folders such as AppData. If you need to browse U:\ and go directly to user folders, you can map network drive U: to D:\userfolder (assuming you have created all folders in D: partition inside userfolder).

There are many of use user out there that do not want to do what you say for many reason. in my case, I like all my user folders even appdata on a different drive than my OS. As many programs like outlook for one, by default, will store your email files in the appdata folder. and many other do the same. For me, I keep a small 1TB or smaller drive for my C drive and programs folders, then have a 2nd drive, of 2tb or larger to have all my user data. On a few of my computers, I have a raid 5 setup for my C drive using 3 1tb drives, and then a raid 1 with 4tb drives. As the @vincecombustion said I too have used the process from the tenform on 6 or 7 computers running windows 10 with no issues. Now I have my first Win 11 system and I want to also move my user folder. One benefit in my opinion of moving the user folder on a new computer, is after it is moved, all new users made for that computer are already moved. once and done. SO if anyone can help please do.

What are you trying to do? Have your user folders moved to another disk and then move that setup on a new computer? In that case you need to copy all your user folders to a new partition or new disk with the same drive letter. For example if the applications expect to find your data in D:\user folder, then you must make sure all your data are on folder user on the D drive. This is not very different from cloning a single disk with the user data on their original location.

In windows 10, as shown in the how to referenced in the opening post. There are steps you can take to move the users folder to another drive. And all of windows will know it’s new location. The unattended answer file will tell shaper- in windows 10 to make this change.

No magic involved, just create the new folders (Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos) at the new drive. Then right-click on each original folder (eg C:\users\yourname\Documents) and select Properties, go to the Location tab and click on Move to browse at the new location (eg D:\Documents). This will change the location of the folder, but you have to copy-paste any existing files manually, it is not done automatically (as far as I can remember from previous Windows versions).

You are missing the bigger picture.

This is not just about those individual folders. This is about *everything* in \Users being on a separate partition / disk. It is best accomplished during a clean installation of Windows, and I am another one who has been making use of this since the Windows 7 days, using Kari's tutorial from sevenforums.

What you're talking about is moving those 5 or 6 folders, manually, and nothing else (so that AppData, for example, is still in C:\Users). What hte OP, and jecondit, and I, and others, want is for the entire \Users folder to be located away from C:\ completely - in my case, I move it to a separate physical drive.

Never moved the complete folder, did not need to. The larger disk space occupied is usually in Downloads and Videos folders (and Desktop if you save everything there). Moving these you save a lot of space. Rarely you need to move AppData or anything else. Cannot guide you, sorry.

Thank you
I suspect this may be the cause of it not working:

  • Line 6: The value in ProfilesDirectory tags is the new location for the Users folder, in this example answer file it will be moved to D:\Users.Be sure that the drive into which you are relocating the Users folder is empty or at least does not contain any Windows system folders, especially Users folder or parts of it from any current or previous Windows installation."[/
The root directory of any partition / drive that Windows has access to always has that hidden RecycleBin and System Volume information folders. Those are system folders.
It doesn't have to be \Users, it could be \A, but according to that note, it looks like it cannot be the root.

Never moved the complete folder, did not need to. The larger disk space occupied is usually in Downloads and Videos folders (and Desktop if you save everything there). Moving these you save a lot of space. Rarely you need to move AppData or anything else. Cannot guide you, sorry.
But that is what the user is asking for and has done plenty of times. he, and others, and me, *do* need to / want to move the entire folder.

Just a comment, there is a file called NTUSER.DAT in the logged on User in C:\Users that may break the startup process if moved.

Mine is in D:\Users with no issues. And as the OP and others have said, we've done this, numerous times. I've been doing it for well over a decade (and 3 different OSs).

It's not jsut a 'copy and paste' scenario here - it is using the Windows sysprep tool to move the location during install and have it set as the default location for the \Users tree moving forward, making use of a mini answer file to change the setting during that installation phase.

Spspakons,

On my main computer( still win 10), Dell Desktop with 4 Physicals Drives ( 1 m.2 SSD, 1 2.5 SSD, and 2 3.5 3TB drives). I have my whole \users folder moved to my 2nd SSD drive, and just my main user account has 163 GB of data in it, after I moved by mapping that you said to do of my common ( video, pictures, Music, downloads, documents, desktop) used folders to one of the 3.5 drives, as I has 2.3 TB of data in those folders.

So to say 163 GB of data is negligible, is a bad statement, in that every build is different and like me I use a small drive for my c in my case 512 GB , and a my 2nd SSD is 2 TB, my 2 3.5 drives are both 3TB. so 163gb is almost half of my drive space if I left it on the c drive. As It is my C drive has 307 Gb of data on it after having the \users folder moved.

SO it is because of setups like this I want to be able to move the \users folder in a windows 11 build.

These 2 HP Envy all in ones are my test bed for windows 11, I have 2 desktop towers waiting to be setup with windows 11 after I work the process with these two computers.

Edit- See Kari post #24
(so I think you can not replace D:\Users by U:\)

That's why we normally build a new computer with an SSD disk and put a second drive for data. Of course the user must save his data the large hard disk, not the SSD.

That's why we normally build a new computer with an SSD disk and put a second drive for data. Of course the user must save his data the large hard disk, not the SSD.
Windows (85G) and Lubuntu (43G) are on a 128G M.2 SSD and Users and data are on 1 T HDD.
It is a way of having the speed of a SSD and the space of a HDD at low cost.

I've got a 2TB SSD data drive in addition to my 256GB SSD system drive.... Speed and space!
