I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
I have PM'd a BT (my ISP) moderator on their support forum. I will update here if I learn anything useful.

My ISP's IT team have responded.
‘my new hub is transmitting the old wifi and accepts the old password’’
this can’t happen unless someone has configured it for the customer.
So I went back and said is it possible that the Customer Care Team has actually done this? I'm dealing with a different mod as the regular one is on holiday.

I think it is very possible. I'm in Canada and my ISP knows my pw to my router. It's their policy. Even changing the pw will not prevent them from discovering it although they are technically required to ask your permission to access it.

I don‘t think they need to discover it, they would have a standard entry. There is always an alternative entry they can give me when on an occasion I locked myself out of my router, and it wasn’t the password from under the router.
I’m not sure how they do it and I doubt they would tell me. Also, I should mention that this was a BYO router, not ISP supplied.
So I can only assume they get in via the fact I am synced with their server or something.
On the occasions that they have supplied a new modem that may have died when using one of theirs, they pre set it up using the same config that the original one had. Perhaps in my user profile there is a config file at my ISP.

My new router stopped transmitting the legacy wifi yesterday. This must be confusing for customers whose wifi clients stop connecting four days after replacing a router!

I have a related question - When you got your new router, why didn't you change your SSID and password to the one from the previous router? It's much easier than reconnecting all your Wi-Fi stuff.

As I said, I'm in Canada. In fact, I can provide a recent example of this as I wasn't quite getting a full Gb on my download speed and called my ISP. The tech came over and asked me what my password was and I scrambled to go get my 'little black book' (you know, the one I mentioned in sundry times because it has proven to be the safest way for me to store passwords all these past decades.) Anyway. He said, "Never mind, I'll tell you what your password is and dashed for his van." By this time I had my LBB in my hands and was flipping through the pages when he came in the door. Guess what. He had my password. It entered correctly. I found it in my book only seconds later. He actually beat me to my password.
So umm... I'll say it again: Your ISP knows your password even if you change it.

- Gave Dell touch screen with Windows 11 to daughter and got me an OTVOC. Being a PC builder I own many desktop PCs as well. I am a father of five providing PCs, laptops, and tablets for all my family, most of which I have modified, rebuilt, or simply built from scratch. I do not own a cell phone, never have, never will.
This is why I always buy my own router and modem. I don't want the isp hardware as its really terrible security wise, and also avoids rental fees. At least in the usa, not sure how it works in other places.

What about support? If there is a problem the ISP doesn't have to help you do they?
Many years ago I rented the modem but had my own router. When I had an Internet problem the ISP would help until I disconnected the router.

I don't really need support. If I have an issue I can confirm pretty quickly if it is on my end or theirs. For example, if my modem has been working well and then all of a sudden loses connection, it is most likely an issue with them, like an outage or an issue with the line coming into my house.
If my modem status lights indicate everything is working properly, and I have no internet or some issue, then it is probably a router issue.
Very rarely do I have an issue with my router or modem. I think a lot of people have issues more frequently because the modem router combo units that ISP provide are absolute junk.
I don't even remember the last time I had to call my isp.

Until recently my ISP would NOT provide me service unless I used one of their modems. I was told that too many people would attempt to hack the service via their modem in order to pirate faster net speeds. Whether that is truly the case I will not surmise. I raised this issue with the IT who visited me recently (and made a mess of my cables in the process of removing them from my surge protection) and he said that I could get my own router now if I wished but I would not get any support with it from them. He also frowned at all my switches and told me that I was only allowed to have one. So, yes, @MisterEd , you are correct as far as Canada is concerned. I'm toying with the idea of fiber to my door as we can get it here now despite my living in a location with a population of less than 2000 people. The oil industry has its perks.

I have 2 x 24 port switches and two 4 port switches. Plus an 18 port network box in the garage that is plugged into the Fibre router and feeds Ethernet cables through the house.
I don’t get how they can dictate that? You have 2, 3 or 4 ports on your router, after the connection leaves your router, isn’t it not their concern? How are they to know or care how you split your Ethernet? If anything it would be detrimental to your incoming (which it probably isn’t) it isn’t pulling twice, 3 or 4 times your connection. Crazy
