Solved Need help downgrading from Windows 11 Pro to Home


I would keep windows 11 pro, as it as some features that Windows 11 Home doesn't not (for example, Group Policy Editor).

I'd like to echo the sentiment of JAM83, but add a question to this:

Could you help me to understand what the reasoning is behind wanting to switch from the Pro edition of Windows to the Home edition?

I'm not trying to push and say that you shouldn't do this, but I'm merely having difficulty understanding what the desire to do this is.

To me, it's kind of like having a million dollars in the bank and saying "I really don't need a million dollars. I could live fine on half that." Nothing says you have to spend the full million dollars, but having that extra available doesn't hurt. Likewise with Windows Pro. You have additional capabilities over Windows Home but nothing says that you have to use those features. However, if one day you find that one or more of those features might be helpful, it's nice if they are available.

I don’t have a product key or activation key for the windows 11 pro so literally it doesn’t seem so wise to keep using it, if I keep getting told to activate it, I don’t know if you get

Do you have a Windows 10 Pro key? If so, If i'm not mistaken, you can use that . . . You would have to install Windows 10 Pro, activate it with the key, THEN do the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro. . . Then you'd b activated genuinely

I'm guessing that the laptop came with the Home version intalled. I have thought about this and to me this doesn't make sense. I would think that by doing a clean install that the install would read the imbeded key and install the proper version. How did the Pro version get installed?

By update, I updated it and that is why it is so confusing, because I just woke up one morning and noticed the “Activate windows” message and many features got disabled.

No from windows 10 yeah, I updated it using the normal windows update to windows 11, and I never encountered any issues nor until recently.

Just for reference, if you have a Win 10 Pro key, you can install 11 PRO directly, no upgrade needed.

A Windows 10 key IS a Windows 11 key. There is literally no difference.

So why is it asking me to activate then?? I mean if the laptop came with a windows 10 and all I did was to update it to windows 11 I’m lost

@jaiblizz, if I may, just one tip...

I didn't go back to check your system details, but if you are using a system that originally shipped with a Windows Home edition, you will want to be aware of this:

If you ever attempt to perform a clean install of Windows in the future, Windows setup will look at the signature in the BIOS and see that the system originally shipped with the Home edition and will select that edition automatically. To get around do this:

Create a text file called ei.cfg. Place the following two lines in that file:

[Channel]
Retail

NOTE: Use something like notepad to create this file. Don’t use a program like Word that can insert special formatting characters into the file.

Place the ei.cfg file in the \sources folder on your installation media.

Now, Windows Setup will present to you a list of available editions from which you can choose the Pro edition.
