Need to shrink Windows space usage without Clean Install


Update to all -- first off, thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Second, the Repair-Install, and clean-ups afterward, did the trick. I have gone from 50GB of used space to 33GB of used space.


I would either increase the partition size (if doable), or get a bigger drive.
I think 200GB is the minimum for a Windows partition, so you never have to worry about space.

Just my two cents.

I am having the same issue with DISM not able to clean-up the store. Tried everything mentioned in this thread, except for repair install, with no luck. Elevated prompt, log-in as Admin, storage sense, etc. I did notice that the StartComponentCleanup would never get past 20%. I'll try the repair install later today and report back.

Repair install went fine, on version 22000.675 now, was on 708, but seeing how that is a preview update I'm not surprised. I may go ahead and do a clean install when 22H2 is a little further along.

I did notice that the StartComponentCleanup would never get past 20%.
The first time you run DISM with StartComponentCleanup it should go all the way to 100%. If you then run it again before any further updates have been installed by Windows Update it always stops at 20%, presumably because at that point it detects that nothing has changed since you last ran it. this is normal, my systems have always behaved that way.

Repair install went fine, on version 22000.675 now, was on 708, but seeing how that is a preview update I'm not surprised.
Yes, the repair install should have fixed DISM not being able to clean up reclaimable packages. Like you I too had three reclaimable packages that couldn't be cleaned up. Unlike you I didn't need to do a repair install, I was lucky enough to have a system image I could restore that was from a time before the fault developed.

Before you can fully test that DISM is indeed working again it is necessary to install another cumulative update. The only one available for me to install was of course the 22000.708 one. I did install it, and DISM did clean up successfully afterwards. So whatever caused the problem, it wasn't specific to the .708 update.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Thanks Bree, the thing was, that even stopping at 20% it still had not cleaned the three reclaimable packages. I'll probably update to 708 later this evening and then check how DISM works.

Yes, that's exactly what my system showed when DISM (or more likely the component store it was trying to clean) was broken.

1) Disable Hibernation
2) Lower the Page File
3) Delete your System Restore points and create a new one.
