Solved New Norton

Are you kidding!!!!?

It is only because it gets bundled with new PCs and those who do not know otherwise fall for the marketing hype and pay good dosh when Defender is fine, and free!
Yeah McAfee is probably the worst ...

Many are being media'd into believing the MS spyware hype...

Well, I get MS reports on my apps at the Store and there is absolutely no personal data therein ... don't believe the hype posted on click-bait sites - telemetry is used constructively and extremely useful. Google is a lot worse.

So, you pay for Norton when free Defender is fine. Then you use Libreoffice and Dropbox when the fee you pay toward Norton is more than 50% of MS Office (far superior to Libreoffice) and you get 1 TB of Onedrive which is far superior to the basic Dropbox capability.

Where do you come to the (imo misguided) conclusion you get an added layer of protection using non MS Tools. I would say there is more chance of 3rd party tools having bugs that can be exploited and less likely to be fixed. Of course, hackers may be more likely to target MS software but equally MS put a lot of effort to provide all round protection for its software.

Still your choice in the end.

Wow, I just paid $29.95 for 5 seats of Norton for a year on Amazon. If I can get MS office for $15.00, I'm definitly in!!!

I think you're saying that Norton is 50% more that MS Office, not sure though.

If so, my non-misguided conclusion, is that you're just another Microsoft fanboy, making up facts to fit your opinions.

And, you are correct, it's my choice in the end.

AMEN! I use Malwarebytes Premium and Windows Security. Both work well together, providing me with sufficient security for my systems. :look:

I had a message today from Norton, full of how the "new" Norton will look after all my security needs and how wonderful it will be, apart from a new yellower look it actually told me nothing. Any Norton users know what the so called changes will be? I am a big fan of Norton, I have used them for many years like the old days of System Works. I never use free or cheap AV, the company got hit once so I am extra careful.

I pretty much used Symantec/Norton up until Microsoft introduce Microsoft Security Exchange (now Windows Security) on Windows 7 & 8. Never gave me problems. When I was in the Air Force, during the 90's, we used Symantec. I also had Ghost backup.

Anyway, the internet FUD tried to sway people away from them but they survived. Truthfully, if it wasn't for Microsoft's Windows Security, I'd most likely be running Norton's AV (y)

That all said, I've no idea what they're doing now.

You're so right about McAfee, I think every pc in the UK has it on and a lot of people extend it as it's there. For me (and many other) we love Norton. I am lucky, money is not an issue for AV and I like the maintenance. I rana successful company with "free" software and we got hit hard by ransomware so with my own I stick with Norton for peace of mind

It was the same in the US where pre-built PCs came with a one-year license of McAfee installed. And most driver disks also included McAfee as an offering (along with other third-party utilities).

I used Norton for many years. Norton Internet Security was very good and never gave me any problems. I used it from 1999 to 2010 when I got tired of paying for protection and first went with Comodo which was good but started annoying me with all the interaction required. Then I went with Avast Free which I used for years. When Windows 10 hit the scene with the vastly improved version of Defender, I went with just that and it's fine. I think it's all home users need.

I'm interested to see what happens with Norton now they own Avast, AVG, and Avira. There haven't been many changes yet but I'm sure they are coming.

Personally, I don't use any Microsoft products other than the operating system. I use Norton, Libreoffice, Dropbox, etc. Using other than Microsoft, is just an added layer of security protection, in my opinion.
I'm the opposite. If Microsoft has a product that does what I want and it's free, I'm in. That even goes for Windows Media Player. The only MS offering I don't use is Office because it costs too much. I use the WPS suite from Kingsoft which works just fine. For email. I use Thunderbird because it works the most similar to Outlook. (Man I miss Outlook Express).

Norton and McAfee are both resource hogs !! Windows Defender is a very good at protection & is updated quite regularly !! It is what i recommend to all my clients !! No need to pay for protection !!

I agree that Defender is now all you need but people said for years that Norton was a resource hog and bogged things down. I never found that to be true.

@The-Hive

I've changed my plan, sort of... when my current Bitdefender subscription runs out, I gonna try Bitdefender AV (free), and Zonealarm Free Firewall.

I didn't know Zonealarm had "just" a free firewall anymore.
But, it seems they do, and it sounds pretty good from the reviews I've read.

And Bitdefender AV (free) is just as good as the paid version, but without all the junk that I don't use anyway.

Scroll down to the comparison...

So @flashh4; how do push a negative on something you've never experienced yourself. You was so sure of your statement ending it with exclamation marks, yet when challenged you post this....
My comment was based on my clients reporting back after removing them !!
That clearly says you're relying on unverified information to disparage a product you've not used

This is a classic case of regurgitating noise to simply disparage a product never used.
