New SSD not Recognized in BIOS

Hi all-

I own an HP Laptop (HP 15-ef2013dx) which still works great. Unfortunately the hard drive is at capacity and I decided to upgrade to a larger SSD. I purchased an SP M.22280 SATA III SSD A55 (1TB) which appeared to be compatible. I cloned the current hard drive twice, once using Macrium Reflect and then DiskGenius. The cloning process in both instances was successful. However, when I install the new drive, it's not recognized while booting and I get a message stating "boot device not found". When I reinstall the original and connect the new drive via USB, the laptop does recognize the new drive.

When I go to Bios set up options, Boot Options, the drive isn't listed.

Thoughts/suggestions??

Does the BIOS have secure boot? Disable it, reboot into BIOS.
Not recognised, set to legacy mode
Not recognised, set to IDE

If bought at Costco or Wallmart, there is a possibility that the M.2 port is disabled/locked.

Yes, 2.5" ... I believe it was Best Buy or Staples.

I did try to disable the secure boot with no luck.

if your data and required programs/software is backed up on the other drive
i would place the new SSD into the system and do a clean install of Windows
using a bootable Rufus made USB drive see if that can recognise the drive.
Rufus can be downloaded from the MS store.

You shouldn't have a drive and its clone connected at the same time.

I'm excessively literal-minded.

I presume that you mean space for a 2.5" SATA SSD.

Sound like the cloning didn't work properly, for no reason I can guess.

A quick update here... according to the manual, the SSD compatibility is SATA M.2 2280-02-B-M. However, the SSD in the laptop is marked NVMe ... SK Hynix HFM256GD3JX013N.

I initially tried a Crucial Gen4 NVMe 2280 M.2 SSD based on Crucial's compatibility utility with the same result. It appeared to clone successfully, but when I swapped the SSD's, it also wasn't recognized.

Now I'm confused as to SATA vs. NVMe...

Thoughts??

I’d be going by the comparability listed at HP.
Not all drives work on all laptops

M2 type SSD drives there are two types SATA and NVMe.

HP has a support forum. Ask about it there might yield better results?

There’s an old thread there with the last post being 2021 with similar problems. The result was that the drive shouldn’t of been used in the laptop in question.
I’ll try find it in my morning.

I would boot the computer from a Windows 11 installation USB flash drive and see if Windows install sees the SSD. At the first screen after booting from the USB flash drive, you can press Shift + F10 (or you may need shift + Fn + F10) to open a command prompt. Then:
diskpart
list disk
