Defender
When you think about it, it's a little scary that Defender needs a daily update... 🤔
Well that is a kind of "Damned if you do, Damned if you don't' statement.

People complain if Defender updates every day and others if it does not.

In the end, we have to trust MS strives to release updates as frequently as needed.

There will always be people who knock defender but frankly, I have not had a serious issue with it now for many years.

The single biggest issue is the prevalent lack of the (oxymoronically named) common sense.

The single biggest issue is the prevalent lack of the (oxymoronically named) common sense.
As I'm sure you know, common sense is certainly misnamed given the lack of it in the general population!

Over many years I've had many AV solutions, I've probably given a majority of the common names a spin at some point.

I remember when Defender was under different names and had less than a stellar reputation, but nowadays it compares favorably with many of the 3rd party AV solutions. Since I don't really want all the bloat that many of them bring, Defender is a good choice for me. One issue with Defender is not because of any weakness, but rather because of it's widespread use, that being it is frequently targeted for new exploits simply because it's the most common protection for so many systems. That's doubtless also the reason for so many updates so often.

I have what is probably considered "pretty safe" browsing habits, and it's been many years since I've experienced any malware issues. I'm sure it's possible that at some point I may get hit, but then that's why all the levels of backup on-line and air-gapped.
