No Windows Startup Sound

Windows 11 Pro 23H2
Main rig - no startup sound. All other sounds are normal. I'm using the W11 sounds defaults.
Second rig - same settings - got startup sound.

The box is checked under Sounds Tab in the Control Panel Sound section.
Both Registry entries are correct (0).
Group Policy entry is correct (No)
Fast Boot and Fast Startup are OFF.

Still - no Windows Startup Sound. Ideas?

This is obviously not the most pressing PC problem. It's been this way a long time and I've just never really cared. But now I'm curious. It should work.

This is just a wild guess. Maybe the soundcard driver doesn't load until after Windows is running.

Try unchecking play a sound at startup, restart, then check the box again. It might make a difference

Have you checked that the sound file you want is actually present? I don’t know why it wouldn’t be, but check all boxes I suppose.

Whoa! Good call!
Navigating to C:/Windows/Media and opening the Windows Startup Sound file in Winamp reveals that it is 0.00 seconds long and nothing plays.
Other sound do play in Winamp, but there are several that are "empty".
So it would seem I have corrupted sound files. What is the best way to get new ones? I suppose I could just copy the folder from Rig #2.

Not so easy.

Build #2 Windows\Media folder is exactly the same as Build #1.
Windows Startup.wav is 0.00 seconds on both.

Further mystery: a day or two after I started this thread I got a startup sound. One day. Hasn't happened again.
So I'm confused. If Windows Startup.wav has no sound data, where is Windows playing this wav from?

All the other system sounds you can choose you can test and play in Sound > Sounds, but not "Play a startup sound". So how do you tell where this sound actually comes from?

Further, I found a W11 Windows Startup.wav file online that did have sound data and did play in Winamp.
But when I went to copy this file into the Media folder I ran into the permissions problem (TrustedInstaller). I don't want to invest any more time into all that now. Maybe later this weekend.

Can turn that off? I’m sure it’s one of the things I do on a fresh install and restore when done..

Then I run a program called "Startup sound changer" that I've used for years.
And I direct it to the Startup.wav file in my Media Files folder.

I do about the same thing, for the "You've got mail" .wav file for my email program. (O.E. Classic)
Playing with Windows sounds, can be fun, once you understand the basics.

I've attached the "Startup Sound Changer.exe" program for those who will use it.

I've always made a habit of killing ALL no essential processes and apps at startup. My Task Manager Startup Tab it a long list on "Disabled" programs.
Only Realtek Audio and Windows Defender are allowed to run at startup
