OneDrive: Still the elephant in the room.

I was always intimidated with OneDrive since day one, for various reasons, and it stuck with me like an annoying allergy!
Nothing wrong with the concept, I just always shied away from it.
I have 200GB of free online storage and I use about 100th of it!
I don't really require online storage and, I have no need to share files collaboratively or socially.
If I need to share something, I just email it.

Power to those who find OneDrive invaluable, as well as those who feel the need to eradicate it from their systems!

I personally don’t know what to do without OneDrive. Almost everything is on OneDrive and it works great to have all my files, private and for work, available everywhere at all times.

I guess, a lot depends on the individual and their needs, both professionally and privately.
Me, I'm a blue collar, non professional nobody..., I drive a cement truck, for feck sakes!
Somebody wants a file from me, they'll have to wait til tomorrow!!!

I have had a love/hate relationship with OneDrive for a long time.

This thread has helped me to understand it a bit better, but not completely. Gonna have to get the tutorial to learn more.

True. The only decision I see about one drive is “Do I trust my files online or don’t I?”
My answer was no, I don’t trust placing my files online. I don’t trust Microsoft (as I don’t trust Apple/Google/META etc etc) with my files.

That too!!!

I will admit, it makes me a bit suspicious as to why they push the service so hard..., money..., loyalty, analytics??? Who knows!!!

They're your files, it's your PC..., I say, do your homework and do what's proper for your own purposes.

Nowhere in the thread has anyone mentioned that not everyone has access to fast and STABLE internet service. It's imperative for using any cloud service on the regular. Yet, it seems Microsoft assumes everyone does. That's the boat I'm in. My internet is very slow compared to most other folks these days and it's down a lot. Some of the time I go hours, even days with no internet. I can't rely on it but I have the best option that is available in my area. Infrastructure sucks when one lives in a rural area.

But what I was asking was 'Can my response to your quote, when I chose quote, be inserted directly beneath (between where your quote was voiced in the thread and the next person's reply to the thread) your post? For example if I posted a topic, and you were the first to respond, and then there were 30 more responses, and I didn't get back to the topic till after those 30 responses, could I insert my response to you as the third response to that topic? (This is the way groups used to operate--sort of like outline form.
I think the answer to my question is "No" but I discover so many new (good!) things about this forum every day, that I was wondering...

And so long as we're on the subject of "quotes", what are "Multi-quotes"?

Click “Multi” next to quote, on each post you want to respond to, then at the bottom of your new post you will see a box that says “insert multi quotes” and go with the flow, meaning, you’ll see what to do. There will be a space between each quote for you to respond.

Part of the problem is that when MS says 'backup your files with OneDrive cloud storage', they don't really mean backup. They mean, 'assign the default locations of Documents, Desktop, Pictures to remote OneDrive cloud storage, and REMOVE them from your local drive'. You can subsequently, optionally, configure things to be stored either persistently or ephemerally on your local drive. But remove something from OneDrive, and it's removed from your local drive.

If you don't want to have anything to do with OneDrive, before you delete it, if you don't want to lose all your stuff, make darned sure that you have reassigned Documents, Desktop, Pictures to your local drive. You can do this in the settings of the OneDrive app, or with some registry twiddling - there are scripts to do it here in the tutorials, I believe. Then opy the contents of the OneDrive 'Documents', etc. folders to your local folders.

IMO, MS descriptions of how OneDrive works are abysmally confusing and misuse the word 'backup'. But I don't want my stuff on anyone else's computer in any case, be it Google's GDrive, Apple's iCloud, or OneDrive.

I thought is was per User. For example my Microsoft 365 subscription allows me 1TB of storage and 1TB of storage for anyone I share my Microsoft 365 subscription with up to the maximum limit.

Let's say you asked a question and 3 people answered.
At to bottom right of each response click on +multi

Then in a new post on the bottom left, click on "Insert multi quotes".

Also.... when you see a quote... at the top left, you'll see the account name of the person that was quoted and a tiny arrow. If you click on that arrow... it will take you to the post where the quote came from.

You can even respond in between the quotes, to each person.

This forum uses new improved software, compared to most other forums.
Just click on things... and most will become self evident.

At the very top left, above all the threads... if you click on Forums and then scroll all the way to the bottom, you will find the link to the HELP topic, with other info...

Short answer = Yes. Longer answer = You have to learn to turn OneDrive On and Off. I'm still learning, though.

From memory, go into options of each program (word/excel) and look in the “save” section.
