Phone link dies again

I no longer feel the need to link my Phone to my PC.
The novelty has worn off completely!

The need for speed.

Just another gadget app that I don't need. Occasionally I'll need a photo off my phone but google drive...or onedrive.. solves that little issue.. That's about it.
But you got to consider I'm not one to be glued to my smartphone all the time either. I talk when I want to and text when I want to. Both at my leisure, not at that of the folks trying to reach me. I spent 32 years with a phone to my ear all day every day. I hate the darn things of any variety with a purple passion.

Just want to say, Phone link has died again both on my PC, and the laptop. The good news is web messages google works fine.
Phone link keeps saying the phone is offline. I tried multiple times to connect it again, but also the QR code that gets generated, phone link claims is invalid, EVERY SINGLE TIME I tried to make it work which is about 10 times, so I gave it over to the ridiculous software that never keeps working bin. The other error was it would say it is already connected. I just don't have the time to keep up with it or bother to make it function again. I don't even know why phone link failed again, maybe broke on one of it's frequent updates, but it has not been working for about a month.
I don't remember you ever say which phone you have. Is your phone on the list of supported devices?

I have been using Phone Link on both my laptops with a Samsung S21. One has Windows 10 while the other Windows 11. The only problem is that sometime I have to grab the phone and give permission again to connect again.

I use Phone Link to make/receive phone calls, receive text messages and, copy photos/screenshots to my laptops. I also sometimes show the phone's screen on my PC and run phone apps from my PC. The only thing missing is audio from a phone app is not heard on the PC. To solve that I downloaded and installed the Bluetooth Audio Receiver.

Samsung S8 Note. I was thinking the design philosophy behind phone link is wrong, typical MS thinking where the app and its data supersedes the data source device. The device (phone) is the source of the data and should be the master, while they have programmed phone link to be the master. Obviously, phone link is retaining useless data as all the real data is on the phone, phone link should care nothing about that data it is holding. Phone link keeps a non viable configuration. The times I have had to relink google messages, it has always accepted the QR code. Phonelink should reject the old data and it's config, should NEVER say QR code it generates itself for a connection is invalid. Phone link remembers the old configuration, won't accept a relinking, so likely what I would have to do is delete the data and it's app to do a fresh install. The data left in phone link for the phone is worthless and not important.

And sure if it works all the time for you, then you will think app is such a great thing... I am still wondering why it loses the link and quits working. Does that happen if the phone is restarted, or is it from phone link being upgraded.

I have always found this to be to biggest annoyance with Phone Link. Sometimes you can go months without an issue, and then suddenly the app goes bonkers with connection issues. and now you have to go through the hassle of reconnecting again. And even that's a hassle at times.

When it works, it's a great feature. I use it to send and read text messages from my phone. Make calls.

Anyway, the phone I'm using is a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

Supported devices for Phone Link app experiences

When I had a Samsung S7 I used Samsung Sidesync. Sidesync was very buggy when it came out. It was supposed to work with WiFi and USB but rarely worked with WiFi. However, just as an update finally fixed making a WiFi connection with it they dropped further support.

I think it would be simpler if Microsoft support simply listed an Android OS version as well.

Example my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra phone is currently running Android version 13 (Tiramisu). Android 14 is scheduled to be released in third quarter of 2023.

Another example of MS deprecating perfectly good working older devices. They do this all the time with older hardware. One of my several PCs runs win11 perfectly even though MS says it is not supported. The phonelink quits working on 2 computers I have, one is a laptop that MS allows to run11. The other PC is a win10 machine with a forced to 11 override upgrade, so it made no difference what PC I used. Thing is web messages for google always works with my phone. I never plan to make phone calls on the PC, it is only for easier messaging.

Here I have to disagree.

It is not Microsoft's responsibility to keep older hardware / software going, and or compatible with new Windows OS releases. That responsibility belongs to the hardware / software vendors, as well as the end user relying on those items.

Unfortunately, this is part of the price of ownership when moving to a new OS or continued updates. Nothing new here.

... google messages for web has been very reliable.
Another option would be a multi device Bluetooth keyboard, (at least for texting/typing, anyway)...
