Hi folks
even with EXCEL power queries files / paths with names longer than 266 Chars are coming out as Dos 8.3 format. Internally Windows can display properly but seems windows aps are using the old API.

Filezilla displays in Windows properly -- so why can't other Windows apps especially brand spanking new ones like EXCEL in LTSC 2021 or even in Office/365.. With some network drives now 20 TB or more long file / path names isn't a rarity any more.

Have you tried one of the LFN files in a different spreadsheet program such as Quattro Pro, LibreOffice Calc, Lotus 1-2-3, OpenOffice, etc.? [I have them installed.] I haven't a need for really long file names but having a sample would let me try even if compressed for transfer.

Hi there
EXCEL for me is much too useful to switch to any of the other "Clones" although WPS office looks about the best of that bunch . I've used it on Linux but Linux / Unix doesn't have a problem with long filenames -- so I'll perhaps try it on a Windows VM.

Its something Ms should really fix in File explorer etc -- get the OS basics right before worring about "Square Circles" or stupid emojo things.

Cheers

the issue here is that file selection /menu drop downs and hence the file selection display are based on the old File explorer GUI.

It has happened over the years that the File, Open or File, Save as feature in many programs does not open the full File Explorer, doesn't give all the details or options available, just something I've learned to work with over the last 30 years..

Hi there
but only recently this 266 char thing is really becomming a nusance -- Have you haven't been in a position where you to re-organise and clean up NAS server disks with a total of 120 TB of storage or more on them and maybe 200,000 files on them !! not a nice job but someone has to do it and I'm not doing this sort of stuff manually !.

Cheers

Actually I have all I can do with a pair of 2TB NAS drives plus 2 4TB USB drives. My need for the Ethernet NAS is accessing stored data from other computers, wired and wireless, mostly wireless Notebooks.
