I reckon most of those who have rose coloured specs for W7 have not used ot on years or do not actually use it for technically productive work.

W8 was a major rewrite technically and in many ways far superior, but MS lost the plot when it came to not having a start menu. Once you installed something like Start8 it was actually a good OS in terms of it technical advancements.

W10 was really only W8 with a new gui initially, and now we have W11 which iinitially was W10 with a new gui.

W7 was an evolutionary cul-de-sac like Neanderthals.

A couple of years ago or so (pre Covid), I worked in a company on a job that was still using W7. That was so painful, it was like pulling teeth.

so in summary - W7 - Good riddance.

W7 NT 6.1, W8 was NT 6.2, W8.1 NT 6.3. W10 NT 10.0, and W11 NT 10.0,
The big change was W8.1 to W10 and W11 is just a reskinned W10.

Exactly. Same here. IMO the Settings are not always clear what section what is in. So a quick search. Fortunately, the search field is AI friendly and will suggest as you type.

I moved from W7 to W8 within the first week after the official release. W8 had better security, was a bit more responsive, the missing Start Menu wasn't a problem because of Classic Shell, and pleasantries like booting to the Start Screen and the Charms were possible to be disabled. Last but not least, the official (and documented by Microsoft) registry setting to keep it from nagging about upgrading to W10 worked 100% flawlessly─very unlike all the various hacks for W7 that were supposed to do the same. Then finally, telemetry became no longer possible to fully be disabled on W7, and serious bugs started to appear as a result of Windows updates on W7, and W8.1. But, compared to W8.1, overall these bugs were significantly worse on W7. You had to really love Botch Tuesdays during those times. I am talking about the kind of bugs that weren't possible to be fixed right away and that broke important functionality, stuff that got you stuck with a half baked workaround for a prolonged period of time, in some cases AFAIK actually no workaround would even exist in any way at all. You know, Ballmer sickness... lol Eventually those problems went away, for the most part.

When W10 came out, I waited until New Year 2018 before moving to it─by getting myself another new laptop. (Essentially, usually, these days moving to the next Windows is the equivalent of paying another visit to the local grocery store... lol) I witnessed W10 early troubles first hand (on my dad's desktop PC). I did manage to get them all easily fixed simply by googling for explanations like I always do. But, compared to fixing W10 early troubles, staying on W8.1 (until after W10 Fall Creators Update wrinkles had been ironed out at least) was an overall much smoother─or overall less bumpy─"experience" type thing, or kind of affair. IMO and IME anyway.

I did similar to you. I didn't fully commit tom W10 until 2016 but I had been running Insider builds in a VM from the first Technical Preview so was abreast of its early problems. I skipped W8/8.1 completely except for VMs.

I avoided W8/8.1 like the plague. When my only PC died, a trusty old XP laptop, new PCs were all W8 ones, So I got an emergency replacement used W7 laptop from Cash Converters. That then took the free upgrade to W10 in August 2015.

It was long after getting used to W10 that I revisited W8.1 as a VM. Still don't like it, but with W10 experience at least it now made some sense.

I still haven't got a clue why everyone except me looks to have been allergic to W8/8.1 so deeply. lol You didn't have to use UWP apps if you didn't want to. Like I said Ivo Beltchev also saved the day, and, IME at least, W8/8.1 ran a bit more stable─and more reliable in terms of Windows updates especially─when compared to W7 (and late W7 especially, as W8 was released on 1 August 2012) and compared to early W10, especially also (all the way until just before the end of 2017 some time after the Fall Creators Update had been released which seemed to be OK finally).

I too, steered far clear of Windows 8/8.1
I had the same reaction to Windows ME and Vista for that matter.

Vista was just before its time. By and large the hardware wasn't up to it. The change in drivers didn't help either.

Windows ME was utter crap, but Vista was still possible to be turned into a fairly decent OS by doing the right tweaks and applying a few settings even though I will be the first to admit I completely hated it too, so yeah, I skipped them both. But then, the amount of tinkering that was needed to get Vista to hold a candle against XP was actually rather huge so, I can easily understand that. But to have skipped W8/8.1, again... why? Was it the baseless anti W8 propaganda on the internet, or what was it?

True. MS released Vista before the manufacturers released the hardware to run it.

Windows 8/8.1 was not designed for desktop computers. It was designed for Windows Phone, which failed.
Sure you could change it all back... but that was backwards.
It should have looked like Win 7 with the option to make it look like Win 8.

MS is making the same mistake with Win 11, IMO.

In my case it was just too much of a change from the pretty W7 to the, in my eyes, blocky and ugly W8. I wasn't going to pay good money to upgrade to that.

Win Vista = bad

I honestly believe that MS is trying to push us to a subscription OS, designed for tablets and phones.
I don't believe they will succeed, but i think we are all gonna have to suffer through them trying.

It's sort of like Office 365. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but most Office folks, are deciding against it, it seems.
People and corporations like to buy and own things. Renting them gets to be chains they'd rather do without.

I wouldn't really classify W11 as bad, just not as good as W10.

My point was that W8/8.1 had multiple improvements over BOTH W7 AND early W10. Enough to justify the small effort it took to go through "unmetrofication" (IME anyway).

I like eye candy too, just not enough to justify making all those other sacrifices. So, for me, it just boils down to function over fashion. That's it. It's a thing.

XP was an absolute unstable dog until SP2, which is odd as it was built on 2k, which was rock solid. Also, Vista was a great OS; the only people that had problems were the ones running it on too low-spec hardware.

Young people, first out in the world... rent. As soon as they can, they BUY a house.
This is what MS doesn't seem to understand.
Sure it will be easier for them. They won't have the average person trying to tweak their OS. MS will have complete control.
Less tech support costs, etc.

Unfortunately for MS... people don't like that.
There was an article a couple days ago. People in a neighborhood in California, got fed up with Comcast... so they just built their own cable company... just for their neighborhood.

Comcast wanted $210,000 for Internet—so this man helped expand a co-op fiber ISP

Fed up with Comcast and AT&T, Silicon Valley residents started their own network.

Same thing with video games... they tried DLC, people thought hey that's neat... for a while.
Now... they wish they hadn't made that choice. Soon, it'll be back to buying complete games with no DLC or pay to play.
