Prevent Update

Hi,

I watched a post in instagram about Windows 11 24H2 turns on Recall by default. Could I just prevent updates by blocking it at the firewall level? If yes, what are the addresses that I have to block?

As I understand it, Recall is not available yet. I have 4 PCs on 24H2 and none of them have it. When it does arrive, I believe it will be turned off by default. If it isn't, it's just an option in settings you can change.

The Recall feature will only be available on Copilot+ PCs when released. It's not currently available.

Even then, you are able to uninstall the Recall feature like in the tutorial below if optionally enabled.

This "Recall" thing is starting to sound like the Y2K transition. Lots of false information being passed around. I was a Unix administrator when Y2K happened and had managers all over my back wondering what I was going to do about it. I simply told them "nothing". Then, Y2K came and went, and "nothing" happened.

Well, almost nothing. It turns out, I was the only one that was not Y2K compatible. Two weeks after Y2K, my appendix went bad and knocked me to the ground. They took it out and checked it. Turned out that, I had "Cancer of the Appendix". Yes, it is rare, but it is a real thing. That caused a more invasive operation where they removed some of my large intestine (right hemicolectomy). Well, that worked and I have been Cancer free since.

If "Recall" ever turns up on your computer and you don't want it, delete it. That's what I would do.

Windows Updates cannot happen if you have disabled the Windows Update Service.
But that involves some internal Hacking which is way above the pay grade of most users.

However, someone spent a lot of time and effort writing the great little program called simply "StopUpdates10.exe" and it's still FREE!
Download it, run it and just tell it to Block Updates.



Even a complete NUBE can click on that big RED Button! Eh?

Then you'll get the assurance that Windows update is BLOCKED!



And, if you ever decide that you DO want to get an update from Microsoft, just run the program again and click the "Restore Windows Updates" button. How can you ask for anything any simpler than that?

And then stop griping about the update that screwed up your computer!!!

Stopping all updates isn't necessary. There are utilities which search for updates, give you a list with the available updates and let you hide (block) the ones you don't want, such as driver updates or some cumulative updates known to cause incompatibilities. The official from Microsoft is Windows Update Show/Hide Tool and an alternative is Windows Automatic Updates Manager (WAU Manager), both available from Major Geek. Of course to work, you must block the updates BEFORE they are installed, otherwise they won't be on the list.

You can block the upgrade to 24H2 until you are ready to install it when time permits and you have prepared for it. Option 2 in the following tutorial is the easiest to follow I think. Just choose the correct version (23H2) of reg file that you want to stay on: -
I have done this until the bugs in 24H2 have been fixed.
