i uploaded the pics to Google drive and then downloaded them to the new phone.
you can also do that with the contacts and messages on your old phone
use backup to save the contacts and messages to file
then upload these files to Google drive and then download them to the new phone
once the files are downloaded to the new phone you can them import them
to contacts and messages.
