Apps Reset and Restore Default Apps for File Types in Windows 11

Default_app_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to reset and restore the default app association of a file type for your account in Windows 11.

A default app is the program that Windows has assigned to open a file or link type with by default when you open it.

Default apps you choose will only apply to your account and will not affect other accounts on the PC.

This can be helpful when a file type opens with the wrong default app.

The default app selected by a user for a file type is stored in the UserChoice key in the registry below for that specific account.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\<file type>\UserChoice

Contents

  • Option One: Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults
  • Option Two: Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

Option One

Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults

This option will reset and restore the default apps for all file types for the current user.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Apps on the left side, and click/tap on Default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Reset button for Reset all default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-2.png

4 Click/tap on OK to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-3.png

5 You will see check mark to the right of Reset all default apps to indicate when the reset has finished. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-4.png

6 You can now close Settings if you like.

Option Two

Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

1 Click/tap on the file type link in the table below you would like to restore the default app associations of to download its REG file.

The reg option in the table will be a BAT file instead of REG file.

2 Save the REG file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

If the downloaded .reg file is not able to Merge, then double check in Default Apps to make sure the .reg file type has it current default app set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the .reg file again.

5 Either restart the explorer process. sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

6 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

The list of default file types available to download in the table below is just a start for now, and is a work in progress. I will constantly be adding more to the list, but if you need one that is not yet listed, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to get it added to the list.

Hello, :)

ico is in the table for you.
The reg file does not have an app included just the UserChoice registry key. I am trying to restore the file type default app to the out of the box app.

Usually, when a user changes the default app for a file type, it only gets changed and applied under the "UserChoice" key for only their account.

The original default app for .ico files is the "Photos" app. Are you able to change it back?

Hi @Brink

I opened a jpeg and got the pop-up window asking if I want to always use this app to open them file, or just once. I clicked always by mistake and wanted to reset it to have it ask the question again when I open the jpeg.

I did what you said by clicking Reset all default apps, but it still just opens the jpeg without asking the default question. I restarted the PC too, but no luck.

Any idea how to fix that? Thanks

Hello RedLad, :alien:

I added jpeg to the table in option two to hopefully fix this for you. They should open with the Photos app by default.

You would need to use "Open with" like below to select another app to open jpeg files with instead.

@Brink thanks but I have never messed with registry files before really.

When you say they should open with the Photos app by default, I am certain it gave the option always or just once when I open the file.

What is actually going on there under the hood when I download and open these files? Is it similar to this type of thing what you're doing? I'd prefer to do it manually, purely to learn what is going on here.

If a file doesn't have a default app assigned to it by default, it will prompt you the first time you open it to select a default app.

Normally, jpeg files are opened by the Photos app by default.

When you select a different app to open a file by default, it is saved to the UserChoice key for that file extension. The REG files in option two remove this for you to restore the default instead of user choice setting for its default app. The REG files make it easy to do without having to worry about making a mistake and breaking something if done manually.

OK so if I simply delete the three files - (Default), Hash and Progld entries in the following it will reset it to factory settings?

You can delete the UserChoice key for them instead to be easier to reset.
That didn't do it no. It didn't show the window where it asks for always or just once when I did this, then opened a jpeg again.

If it's opening the jpeg file with the Photos app, then that is the default.

You'll have to use the "Open with" context menu like in option one below instead for what you're wanting.

Hi @Brink thanks for the reply.

I had also tweaked a few things, then got a bit lost and couldn't get them back to normal default settings so decided to wipe and start again. However, in the process I nearly had a heart attack (OK, I am exaggerating here). Mainly down to this:

Upon booting to my USB to reinstall, I did the normal things, selecting the initial language, time and currency and keyboard input. Then did the usual delete partitions to just have two drives with Unallocated Space, then selecting the 1TB drive to install to.

But on the next screen with the 5 stages of installing Windows, a window appeared that I have never seen before during these reinstalls of Windows 11. It was a Windows Setup window and said - "Windows needs to restart to continue"

It automatically restarted in the allocated seconds, about 10 seconds or so..then it went and did a few things, like starting services etc, then ended up on the screen where I select my country/region. All seemed to go OK/normal from here to the desktop.

But, my main question here is - why did this happen if it never happened before upon my few reinstalls of Windows 11? Is it something to be concerned about? Would it be due to the fact I deleted them UserChoice folders in the reistry? Or, is it because I have reinstalled too many times now? I reckon this is about my sixth time doing a clean install. I am nearly sure it is only since I deleted them registry keys that it started happening. So strange. I will also post this issue in the installation section.

It's hard to say.

I suppose it could be either from an installed update, or something else requiring the restart.

Very, very strange though isn't it?

Is it anything to be majorly concerned about? I just want to have a good night's sleep, then get back to it tomorrow :)

If you used an official ISO for the USB, then it should be fine.

It's not a dodgy copy at all. I downloaded it from Microsoft.

Ghot has informed me on another post about this that it's perfectly normal. As I said to Ghot, I'll sleep well tonight!

That didn't do it no. It didn't show the window where it asks for always or just once when I did this, then opened a jpeg again.

I just remembered the setting below that will show the "Open with" dialog the next time you open a file when you installed a new app it supports opening. It's enabled by default, so it's just a matter of checking to make sure it wasn't disabled.
