Personalization Reset Notification Icons on Taskbar System Tray in Windows 11

  • Staff
Tasbar_overflow_corner_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to reset the notification icons cache to fix any corrupted icons and remove any old icons from the taskbar system tray for your account in Windows 11.

The system tray on the taskbar corner and taskbar corner overflow menu in Windows 11 shows the notification icons for apps.

Sometimes the notification icons cache may get corrupted causing the icons to display incorrectly or distorted, and still show icons of uninstalled apps in the Other system tray icons (new name) or Taskbar corner overflow (old name) settings. When this happens, the notification icons needs to be deleted in the registry to reset and automatically recreate them.

Here's How:

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below.

Reset_taskbar_system_tray_notification_icons.bat

(Contents of BAT file for reference.)
Code:
@echo off

set regPath=HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
set regKey1=IconStreams
set regKey2=PastIconsStream

echo.
echo The explorer process must be temporarily killed before deleting your taskbar corner overflow notification icons cache.
echo.
echo Please SAVE ALL OPEN WORK before continuing.
echo.
pause

REG DELETE "HKCU\Control Panel\NotifyIconSettings" /F

echo.
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
echo.
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%a in ('Reg Query "%regpath%" /v %regkey1% ^| find /i "%regkey1%"') do goto IconStreams
echo Registry key "IconStreams" already deleted.
echo.

:verify-PastIconsStream
FOR /F "tokens=*" %%a in ('Reg Query "%regpath%" /v %regkey2% ^| find /i "%regkey2%"') do goto PastIconsStream
echo Registry key "PastIconsStream" already deleted.
echo.
goto restart

:IconStreams
reg delete "%regpath%" /f /v "%regkey1%"
goto verify-PastIconsStream

:PastIconsStream
reg delete "%regpath%" /f /v "%regkey2%"

:restart
echo.
echo.
echo You will need to restart the PC to finish resetting your taskbar corner overflow notification icons.
echo.
CHOICE /C:YN /M "Do you want to restart the PC now?"
IF ERRORLEVEL 2 goto no
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 goto yes

:no
echo.
echo.
echo Restarting explorer....
echo.
echo Please remember to restart the PC later to finish resetting your taskbar corner overflow notification icons.
echo.
start explorer.exe
pause
exit /B

:yes
shutdown /r /f /t 00

2 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

3 Unblock the .bat file.

4 Run the .bat file

5 Follow the instructions in the command prompt to reset your taskbar corner notification icons. If you do not restart the computer now, you will need to later to finish resetting your notification icons. (see screenshot below)

6 When finished, you can delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

That's it,

did this get changed/broken somehow? I ran the script, and restarted and everything was unchanged. I then killed explorer/navigated to the traynotify key, and only the IconStreams key was present, not PastIconStreams and I deleted it and restarted. Same result. stuff i dont want present is still present and order is unchanged etc.

well that explains "some" of it, but the irony is the particular app that i want removed is not installed. its a portable app.

The portable app may have registered itself the first time it ran causing it to be listed here.

You can check the app's settings to see if there be a notification icon setting that can be toggled off.

hmm its a really old app. a temp monitoring app (realtempGT) i didnt mean to open and apparently pollute my registry with. any idea where these things are buried so i can "unregister" it?
I did reset it to defaults which removed the "tray info" and "core 0" notification area checkboxes (that i assumed WERE the defaults but i must have set them a decade ago) but its still present.
assume the idea would be to re-run the script now and see if it disappears?

It won't hurt to try the BAT again to see if may remove it since you already removed a lot of traces of the app.

well, tried the BAT again. no luck. while its always nice to come back and not have to re-order/organize my tray icons.. im trying my best to pay that price to eliminate that darn entry from the hidden icon menu.
gonna start searching the registry for mentions of it i suppose.
doing this in the past i would have SWORN it was supposed to reset all my other icons regardless. re ordering them and putting them all into the overflow by default.
everything seems untouched when i run the bat though.

also wonder why pasticonstream is notably absent from my traynotify key.

I'd delete all "RealTempGT" entries in the registry to clean up after it, but be sure to create a restore point or system image first. This way if something breaks, you'll have an easy undo option.

okie dokie, thats what i shall do. thanks much!
onto my other point, shouldnt this be resetting the other icons regardless? their order and whether theyre in the overflow or not etc? I mulled over running the script before i did it based on that alone. I recall having to re order my entire tray area lol.

No. It only clears the cache to remove any uninstalled/unregistered apps still showing, and correct any icons not showing properly. It basically clears and forces the list to be reloaded.

No. It only clears the cache to remove any uninstalled/unregistered apps still showing, and correct any icons not showing properly. It basically clears and forces the list to be reloaded.
hmm musta been an old vbs i used on windows 10 that behaved in that manner then. /shrug. this is much preferred ^^

seems deleting all the registry entries (apart from two in which access were denied) removed it with no fuss.
the keys pointing to the exe in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\bam\State\UserSettings\S-1-5-21-3008639401-3633856472-1746901521-1001 and CurrentControlSet could not be removed and i dont wanna go through the trouble of gaining access/changing permissions etc.

a problem solved and a note to be more cautious surrounding what you run if youre OCD :p

This is the only method that works for me.
Using the .bat file does nothing, maybe it worked on past builds.
