OK then mate, I obviously can’t convince you. AMD processors also contain SSE instruction sets (as displayed in the CPU-Z image above) and like intel, needs SSE4.2 to istall Windows 11 24H2.


Also, @Bree did some tests:

I'll now take the SSD out and try it in another old AMD laptop that has POPCNT, but no SSE4.2, only SSE4a. This one stalls at the Windows Logo, no spinning circle, but no reboot either.

I've now put the SSD back in the one with SSE4.2 and will complete the OOBE.

Windows 11 24H2 has un-bypassable hardware requirements...

I would think that my computer would get the 24H2 update right away, but nothing so far. I check for updates several times during the day. I get plenty of Defender definition updates.

Up until last week, I was also under the impression that SSE4A was sufficiant.

I can only go from the 2 hours I spent looking up 24H2/AMD, after a comment that alleged; SSE4A was not efficient enough to install Windows 11 24H2, as a correction of something I said about SSE4A being sufficient.

I'm butting in and then butting right out. @antspants is correct. SSE4a and SSE4.2 are not the same. It is my understanding that without SSE4.2, there is no way to install 24h2...period. No workarounds, commands, regedits yada yada yada.
I asked the all-seeing, all-knowing, sometimes smart, but sometimes piece of crapolla Co-Pilot and it says:

No, SSE4a and SSE4.2 are different instruction sets. SSE4 (Streaming SIMD Extensions 4) is a broader category that includes multiple subsets.

  • SSE4a was introduced by AMD with its Barcelona-based processors. It consists of four SSE4 instructions and four new SSE instructions. Notably, it introduced misaligned SSE, allowing unaligned load instructions to perform as fast as aligned versions on aligned addresses.
  • SSE4.2, on the other hand, is an Intel-specific subset that was first available in Nehalem-based Core i7 processors. It introduced new SIMD string operations, including an instruction to compare two string fragments of up to 16 bytes each.
AMD processors only started supporting Intel's SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 (the full SSE4 instruction set) with the Bulldozer-based FX processors.

Some confusion is understandable. When MS first raised the CPU requirement in February 2024 with Insider build 26052 the initial requirement was just for the POPCNT instruction, which first appeared with SSE4a. The minimum requirement was very soon raised to the full SSE4.2 instruction set though.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.
