when you said
You may want to lose Norton, you don`t need it.
you need AV and if the OP has paid for a licence he is not going to ditch it. Good advice about the not being written to(y) I think it would be a very remote chance of anything accessing it otherwise and even then it probably wouldn't cause any harm. Mine take ages to bring up the it's safe banner :)

@CornishRattler HELMET? HELMET? I don't need no stinking helmet. :p
As an antivirus, Norton must be good since it is high in ratings most anywhere you look. As a resource hog, it's good at that too.
Ratings and Reviews are mostly paid for. Don't believe in them blindly.

Why get rid of Norton it's his AV and at the end of the day it's the OP's choice to use it and it's as good if not better than a lot of them, It's just that people don't seem to agree with paying for AV and a lot of people don't like Norton
True. This problem is often seen on systems without Norton or other 3rd party security solutions too.

But we didn't know that for 20 posts in. And Windows handles are, and always have been, notorious for not releasing a drive for safe removal. It happens on flash drives and external HDDs....regularly.

... releasing a drive for safe removal. It happens on flash drives and external HDDs....regularly.
For most flash drives and such, Quick Removal is default..., there's no need to use the Eject route...,
as long as Explorer's not open or transferring any files.

when you said

you need AV and if the OP has paid for a licence he is not going to ditch it. Good advice about the not being written to(y) I think it would be a very remote chance of anything accessing it otherwise and even then it probably wouldn't cause any harm. Mine take ages to bring up the it's safe banner :)
I have been using Norton for quite some time. I thought that if the military uses it, it must be good. Now I made that determination in the late nineties and they still used it in the 2000's....

Since you brought this up, I have no obvious indication on my laptop besides SRH&EM and this particular external case has an LED that almost never shuts off and occasionally blinks. I assume solid is just a power indicator and blinking means it is in use, but the LED stays on even during Lock periods and complete shutdowns.
