Samsung 990 Pro SSD rapid health drops

Hello everyone, we have received feedback from our technicians on this:

Samsung is currently reviewing customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART Percentage Used (on Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO.

We were able to recreate the error under certain conditions of use.
To fix the problem, Samsung is expected to release a firmware update in February.

When you buy the fastest flagship SSD on the market, you expect a certain level of reliability and confidence from its performance, but things can and do go wrong sometimes, and customer support is paramount at instilling continued confidence in the brand. This has typically been the case for past Samsung drives, actually, even the non-flagship models have been highly reliable and perform excellently with very few that I have seen needing an RMA.

Colour me with sadness when within just a couple of days of buying the 990 Pro 2TB, I noticed that the drive health according to SMART data from both Samsung Magician and third party tools had dropped to 99%. For the record I have other Samsung SSDs with over 40TB written and still at 99% health 1.5 years later, so I knew this was not normal.

Within another day or so it had dropped to 98%, by this point I'd not even written 2TB to the drive. Fast forward a couple more days and the drive health was sitting at 95%

Looking at comments on the linked forums and social media, there are more people coming forward with the same issue after checking their drives. A reader on Twitter has also shared that his 990 Pro has dropped to 64% with only 2TB being written.

Samsung's RMA division, Hanaro, have reached out and offered to A) Replace this SSD, and B) Try to replicate the problem. Quite why both of these options were not on the table before the issue became public is a mystery. We still request that readers continue to share their 990 Pro drive health stats and what region of the world they are in so that a better overall picture can be drawn of what appears to be a potentially developing situation.

I left them too because of firmware issue. I have moved on to WDC and Hynix.

I've been using a WD Black N700 for few years now and its been a great drive albeit not as fast as my samsung 970 pro drive but I'll take stability any day over speed.

For all the writing I've done to it with my games on it she's still at 98% health. I plan on getting a couple of N850X's next.

3 years ago when I built my sons new box, I got a great deal on the Western Digital SN750, and ended up putting 2 of those in his box. They have worked out great. Previously I had really only used intel and Samsung for for NVMe drives.

When I built my machine 2 years ago, I got the Western Digital SN850 as it was the fastest drive (at the time), and because my experience with the 750's was great. Been very pleased with my 850.

And I ended up building a machine for my wife and got her an SN750 because it was on a great sale and she doesn't need any more speed than that.

So, obviously i've been quite happy with my WD drives

I saw a story earlier today that says the 980 pro 2tb drive has an issue too and I have one in my laptop. :eek1: Fortunately I'm on the latest firmware so it doesn't affect my drive. :p

For reference, what firmware revision do you have on your 990 pro 2TB? mine is 0B2QJXD7 (4193 GB written, 13509GB read), health 100%, available spare 100, percentage used 0, installed 17 january (16 days ago), over provisioning partition set to 10% drive size as default, performance set to "power saving mode" (is installed in a laptop and, even in powersave is fastest than the secondary kioxia 2TB )

Hello everyone, we have received feedback from our technicians on this:

Samsung is currently reviewing customer inquiries about anomalies related to the SMART Percentage Used (on Samsung Magician) and/or Health Status (on Crystal Disk Info) of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO.

We were able to recreate the error under certain conditions of use.
To fix the problem, Samsung is expected to release a firmware update in February.

No smart reset (if you have a loss of ssd health indicated, remains), but fix the degradation source hopefully no more high speed health loss. My drive, luckily, with 5,7TB written has no health loss at all
