Screen glitching (going black) after Windows 11 update

Windows 11 Home
So I updated to Windows 11 a while back. I don't think it was immediately, but a few days after my screen started glitching.

This only happens after the computer has been asleep for a few hours. It's very strange. I wake it up, it goes all glitchy. I restart it and it's fine.

Next day I start it up again and it's glitchy.

The glitch is like this. Everything is ok, I move the mouse and the screen goes black. If I'm lucky it doesn't go back and I can click the restart button before it goes black. This often takes a while because the mouse movement normally triggers it to go black.

The only thing I've really tried is uninstalling the display driver. Once Windows 11 and reinstalled the driver it seemed to be ok, but then started the same problem soon after.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks for your response!

I filled it out to the best of my abilities.

In terms of mother board and monitor display, I am totally unsure what to put or where to look for that exact info.

You did great. I'm not the best one to advise for this issue but others will step in soon. In the meantime.....
You say you uninstalled the graphics driver and let WU reinstall it. If it were me I would either get the appropriate graphics driver from HP or Intel.
To get manufacturer drivers go here. I would also make sure I was running the latest UEFI bios version from HP.
OR
To get latest drivers for all your Intel components go here and install Intel Driver Support Assist tool. Let it scan your computer. It will tell you what components have updates and let you choose which ones you want to install.

I have found that sometimes Intel puts out a graphics update that has not reached the OEM driver database yet.

I think that glasskuter is spot on. Just from personal experience, I can tell you that I have a couple of laptops where the screen will simply not behave correctly after waking from sleep if the generic drivers are used. I have to use the drivers supplied by the maker of the laptop and that solves the issues. At least in my case, both of those laptops use Intel graphics.

Ok so Intel found a graphics driver to install but said:

"If a newer graphics driver is available from Hewlett-Packard (HP), we recommend that you install that driver instead. To learn more about installing an Intel driver on your OEM system, refer to this article."

So I tried the HP one. It found my device, then when clicking it, it said:

"We're sorry We can't seem to find the page you were looking for."

So I'm gonna try installing the Intel thing and see if there are any changes tomorrow.

So I tried what I put in my reply above and installed the newest Intel driver, and no change at all. Disappointing :(.

Seeing as the HP driver update stuff is giving me an error, what else can I do? Are there one or two specific drivers I should update? I can just google the latest updates of those drivers and install them right?

You have tried the advice given which was good advice. Unless you’re will to rule out a windows error and do a repair install, you could possible do a hardware diagnostic. You will need software that maybe @hsehestedt or @zbook or another member could recommend?

Here’s the problem; if your screen goes blank during a repair install, you will have no access to see what you need to do or where the repair install is at. Botching a repair install could lose your operating system (OS). I would start by backing up/making an image of your laptop to an external drive. At the very least, backup your precious personal files to an external drive.

If you run a hardware diagnostic software and the screen goes blank, you wont know what the result is.
Due to the problem, I would do a hardware diagnostic first to rule out any hardware issues, it’s just software running like any other software so if you have to reboot, no loss except you wont know the result. It’s better than having the laptop lose the screen during a repair instal.

Short of that, can you afford to take it to a technician? Is it still under warranty?

Hey there thanks for the help :).

It's definitely not under warranty so that's out of the question. I want to move this hard drive to a new laptop... it's possible that would fix the issue, but I'd rather have it fixed beforehand.

I did recently do a backup. You're suggesting doing a fresh installation of Windows 11?

I would assume the screen wouldn't blank out during this process as it only blanks out after it's been asleep for at least an hour or more. So if I'm using the computer and then install it while the screen is working, it should be ok.

Thanks for the help!

Hi, @mkm

I’d say it wouldn’t hurt to do an in-place upgrade (repair install) as the driver updates etc haven’t worked, have a read of this tutorial, if you have any questions shout out. It can’t hurt to try?

If anyone else can offer a different solution?
I was hoping someone could recommend a hardware diagnostic software but perhaps the people I tagged don’t know of any or have other reasons not to have replied.

You could download and install: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows v2.5.0.0
It might be worth looking into incase you have a hardware issue before you bother with a repair install?
Report back with what you find.
(I’m obviously winging it here)

You could download and install: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows v2.5.0.0
It might be worth looking into incase you have a hardware issue before you bother with a repair install?
Report back with what you find.
(I’m obviously winging it here)

Thank you!

I will give both these things a look and try them out.

So I ran the HP software. Couldn't really figure out what to do, but I went into the video section and ran the Video IO test, and it came back as failed.

I tried to take a screenshot but it wouldn't let me. It says:

"The test found a problem with a video IO port.

Please use another Video IO device and re-test again.

The following documents are available for reference"

I clicked the reference link and it went to an error page on the HP website.

So does a problem with a video IO port mean that it's a physical issue? Perhaps it can be repaired?

If it's a physical issue I'm not sure why it would only occur after putting the laptop to sleep for a few hours?

Anyway thanks again!

Not a full explination but…

Common Reasons for the I/O Device Error

  • The plugged storage device is incorrectly connected. The PC cannot detect the connected device normally.
  • The computer USB port or the USB card reader is damaged or broken.
  • The computer storage device driver is outdated, damaged, or incompatible with your attached device.
  • The external hard drive, memory card, or USB drive is recognized with a wrong drive letter.
  • The external hard drive, memory card, or USB drive that you are trying to access is dirty or damaged.
  • Windows is trying to use a transfer mode that the hardware device cannot use.

Perhaps it just couldn’t find a USB or external drive to test whatever it is it is referring to? I don’t quite understand it but you could run the test again with a USB drive and try.

BUT.. I don’t think I am right.
There is a member in the BSOD forum section that would know. But this doesn’t belong in that Forum section.

Perhaps there is an issue?

It doesn’t say anything specific about Video so I would assume it isn’t a hardware video issue. I would do a repair install.

Did you update your BIOS & Intel Video to the latest official versions for your HP?

In terms of mother board and monitor display, I am totally unsure what to put or where to look for that exact info.
