SD Cards - cannot format Win 11

I think I had this problem once before.
I have a brand new Sandisk and other various cards. Win 11 will not format them. I d/laded SD Association's own formatter and that won't work either.
Something so simple should not be a chore.
Appreciate any suggestions. I have tried in cmd but no joy either.

What you do mean they aren't formatting? What are you doing to format them. What file system?

All I use are SanDisk thumb drives and they all format when I need them to. Usually either FAT32 or NTFS.

Is the drive shown in Disk Management? As what? Please post results from disk management.

If not, you're probably missing the driver for accessing your SD card device

Reading the above, I guess I should ask what "Sandisk" items are we talking about - Thumb drives, SD Cards, or SSD drives???

How are you accessing the SD card? Via a USB SD card reader? Or built in Card reader on the PC?

I'm a computer enthusiast so have quite a few systems that I run. More like an advanced hobby.
Some things to try:

First, verify that your SD card reader / writer is compatible. For example, if you are using an SDXC card, make sure that your reader / writer can handle the XC media.

I have had some SD card reader / writers not work on a machine but work fine on another. Try another machine if possible.

Were they old installation media on them?


You can format a USB nicely using RUFUS. It handles stubborn USB’s.
I am assuming it will also format a card as long as the card is attached to the PC correctly. But it is an assumption.
It will format an SD. I don't have an internal Card Reader so I used an adapter like this:

  • Open RUFUS
  • Select the card
  • Select Non bootable
  • Click start

I'm not too tech savvy - tech has overtaken me :)
My 64gb Sd Card had files from a ISO that I burned at the weekend from a program called Balena Etcher. It was the first time i used it - and that sd card did show up in file explorer. I couldn't do anything with it though. Thanks Ghot as your suggestion worked and I have now formatted this. At least now that one card reader I have works.
We're talking SD Cards only - with one reader being the usb thumbnail type and one the square type (which I know works).
The others don't show up and don't show up on my wife's computer.
So I think that I have to be more careful of what I buy. I downloaded Rufus but they don't show up either.
May have to look at sdxc and readers too.
I'm happier I got one back to normal.

Since you used Balena Etcher I have to assume the SD card was formatted or the files created were in a format Windows doesn't recognize. Depending on how the formatting was done sometimes you have to resort to using the Windows "Clean" command under "Diskpart" to clear all the partitions.

That looks like what I found when I formatted a microSD card for my Raspberry Pi using the Raspberry Pi Imager. When I tried to use it in Windows it couldn't reformat it. I had to use the EaseUS Partition Master to delete the partition. Once I did that I was able to create a new partition and format it in Windows.

Yes, the ISO was for astronomy tracking software that I transferred to my old Pi 4. Seems I did the same. I didn't think it transferred ok so I repeated it on a smaller drive, hence my attempt to format.

Since you used Balena Etcher I have to assume the SD card was formatted or the files created were in a format Windows doesn't recognize. Depending on how the formatting was done sometimes you have to resort to using the Windows "Clean" command under "Diskpart" to clear all the partitions.

I use Balena to format USB's and install Linux on Computers. Best way, IMHO.
