Show off your internet speed!

I try not to complain too much. I stared with a 300baud modem. Typical downloads speeds was maybe 30 bytes/sec. Now that was slow!!!

BTW, back in 2000-2001 when they first introduced high speed Internet they offered 1.5Mbps. In their adds they said up to 50 times faster than dialup. Note the typical 56K dialup modem could download about 30Kbps which is about 50 times slower than higher speed Internet.

You just triggered the trauma of that dial-up sound. The Horror… the horror

In this current house we built, we built in a vaguely remote area. No broadband connections and extremely old copper wiring so we couldn’t even get dial-up.
I’ll tell you what slow is, slow is a satellite dish on your roof with no satellites overhead. 😃 I didn’t really use the internet for 4 years until they got cables up our road. Email, if I was lucky was the best I could get, as long as they didn’t have attachments.

At last, Full fibre finally reached my house. I'd been stuck on FTTC on a very long copper wire for many years. I had to change supplier but so far it has been very reliable and fast. Here is the before (FTTC) speed test and after (FTTP).

It’s a pity files are only as fast as the server they are on allows.

That's the issue when you offer files to anyone worldwide - unless you have a lot of bandwidth to spare, you have to limit speeds.

In my home I have found that the 5GHz band to be faster than the 2.4GHz band. However, the 2.4GHz band in theory has more range so might give a better connection in some circumstances. Some of other computers have slower WiFi so would give much slower results. When I had a combined SSID my laptop would sometimes connect to 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz. I only knew that when the download speeds dropped to maybe 300Mbps instead of 800Mbps. Because of that I split the bands so each one has a different SSID.

I have an Xfinity XB8 WiFi 6E Gateway which has 2.4, 5, and 6GHz bands. I though I would have a 6E device by now but don't.
Normally, Xfinity Gigabit Extra is 1200/35 but was upped to 1200/200 when I signed up for xFi Complete. BTW, My current discount rate ends next month so I may have to drop down to a lower tier if the price goes up too much.
Good afternoon Mr. Ed and thank you for this posting. It really does appear that you have tri-band going on there and I too have my bands isolated as well and specific channels assigned to such devices. Less clutter and interferences you see. As far as my Router, it's a TP-Link Archer AXE300 (AXE 16000) Quad-band streaming 6e router employing two 10G ports, speeds of or close to 4804/4804/4804/1148. Fibre Optic people have an appointment Thursday at my place to sort out why my 2G isn't fully operational. I confess that I believe it to be a boogered up modem they replaced than my AXE 16000. It will all be revealed Thursday soon after they arrive. Conversely, when I use my laptop, it accesses the net at 1201/1201 on the 5G side. That device is the Nighthawk AXE3000 Wi-Fi 6/6e Adapter which performs splendidly most everywhere that it has been with me and the speeds typically remain close to/pegged out at 1201/1201.

Good luck with your Xfinity rate and I hope that you retain that discount. Have you inquired with Xfinity regarding a military discount if this should apply with you. I do believe they have a military discount check my accuracy to be sure. Do take care and lovely to hear from you. I bid you a good evening

Debi Marie

I live in a condo and Bell is the internet provider. Bell may be upgrading the condo to fibre in the not too distant future. I do not play games. I occasionally watch amazon prime documentaries. I attend a Zoom session once a week.

This is my speed. The upgrade will likely cost more. Would it be worth it for me?

Not much change from my last post 1 1/2 years ago where the old test was from my old Sandybridge build (i7-2700K) 2011 era and this time testing System One.

The problem we present to the cable companies here is that it would take them a hundred years to recoup the cost of running cable to us, because the population density is so very low. If everyone on my country road subscribed to a fibre company, that would amount to fewer than fifty subscriptions over a mile and a half of cable distance.

And satellite out here was even less efficient than my current fixed wireless. Much. We had 10 down and 1 up (tops) for years.

But we like having a close neighbor 350 meters away, and nothing between us and them except pasture land and woods (well, and sometimes cows). Our house sits on two acres that we own, about half of it landscaped, and the other half wooded. And we have a seasonal stream that runs through it. High volume during the spring and early summer; not much flow during the heat season and the winter.

Thanks for the "sad," Melchior, but we love it out here: beautiful, quiet, peaceful, no fumes of any kind, safe, and friendly. When we moved in, the neighbors for a mile in each direction brought us pies, cakes, and casseroles that kept us in meals without cooking while we moved in and unpacked the boxes. Nice.

We have Bell fibe internet to our condo. I do not know what technical term to use. Fiberoptic to the premise but copper to the condo. We have Bell Hub 3000.

My download speed it about 48 Mbps and upload 3.8

We changed our Mobile provider to Bell. I presume as loyal customers for decades and now having TV, Internet, Home Phone and Mobile the package we got 200 gigs of shared data for 40 dollars each for our 2 phones. (Bring your own device).

As Bell mobile has 5g, I made my new phone a hotspot and got these speeds.

Before moving our Mobile phones to Bell our data use on our phones varied from 1/2 to 2 gigs. What will I do with 200 gigs?

5G these days will usually beat typical average broadband speeds easily -- but probably won't reach latest full fibre cable stuff (now 1 to 10 Tbps being rolled out in some areas).

The thing to avoid restrictive data limits -- with full fibre optical ISP connection these days there really is NO reason to have these limits at all -- it's basically just typical corporate greed -- as is the typical "Prices increase annually by X% + Y% for "Inflation" or whatever.

With full 8K UHD arriving in the not too distant future just check how many GB / hr if streaming a typical movie at that resolution !!!! -- At RAW footage that's around 122 GB PER MINUTE !!!! --- of course for public transmission some compression wiill undoubtedly be applied -- even so it won't take long to amass several TB of data streaming. There's no problem with actual capacity though on full fibre broadband and if the ISP's say otherwise they are speaking a waggon load of "Bow Locks".
