I've been testing FastStone Capture. It's a very light image and video capture utility that has much more functionality than I expected. I won't go into a lot of detail, but instead let the screenshots do most of the talking.

Of course, the first thing you'll notice is the toolbar. The default size is very small, but it can be enlarged in the FastStone Capture settings -> Toolbar tab. You can also add more buttons to the toolbar in those settings. Incidentally, the toolbar is not where most of the functionality resides.

View attachment 80747

A lot more functions can be accessed via the tray icon context menu.

View attachment 80748

The default output setting is the FastStone Capture Editor, but that can be changed via the tray icon context menu depicted above or by the FastStone Capture toolbar Output button. There are several different options to choose from.

View attachment 80736 View attachment 80746

As stated above, you can change the output, put there is also a "FastStone Capture Draw" button in FastStone Capture Editor where it takes you to FastStone Capture Draw where you can easily add annotations.

Below are all the FastStone Capture settings that are available.

I've enabled a minimized auto start, so when Windows starts, the tray icon is always available.

FastStone Capture is a very functional screen capture application that supports images and videos while being very light on resources.
I have used it for years. The only option that makes the app a champion is its "Capture scrolling window" option (the only reason I'm using the app, yet). This feature allows me to capture various types of scrolling pages, including webpage frames, scrolling elements on webpages, and even scrolling pages on applications such as win32/XML-based apps. I have not come across any other app that can capture all these types of scrolling pages.

In the recent updates, besides adding the MP4 recording option, they have added such settings (on the fly):

You forgot about the Snipping Tool. It has most of the features mentioned in this thread :lie:, except one thing! It can't do its main job, capturing! It just can't take screenshots of (its) native OS elements like the Taskbar!

.... that can step-multitask in layers...
But you can't edit the GIF! I usually create a GIF recording and then add my annotations or edits in Photoshop. That way, I have complete control over the editing process. I can even export the GIF to a video format like mp4/mov. There (in Ps), everything is under control.

You are not on the latest version (11.2310.54.0). The older versions work well.

I'm discovering new things it can do almost every time I use it.
New things!!! Microsoft has a special BB (Black Belt) for making a good app in the first place, then ruins the app by adding some garbage features to it, and making it blind and cripple by adding extra rubbish features. In the end, makes it based on the cloud and terminates its lifespan!

Fortunately/Unfortunately, my native language isn't English, so maybe you are right! But few dare to beat me in spelling/speaking/writing in my native language! I think you've got what I mean!

I'm not here to trash Microsoft; I'm here to learn more so I can teach it to my Senior Citizen students.
But unlike you, I'm not trying to trash somebody/something here and there! And top of all, people are not your students. There are many people out there who never need a teacher!

But I am!

Yes, I did. My native language is US English.
But unlike you, I'm not trying to trash somebody/something here and there! And top of all, people are not your students. There are many people out there who never need a teacher!

Umm, I beg your pardon . . . I believe the people to whom I teach Windows 11 in a classroom setting qualify as students.

"But unlike you, I'm not trying to trash somebody/something here and there!" I also completely understand this statement as the accusation it is.

OK, it works for you. But it has problem on my side! The app works like CBR (Controlled Bug Rollout).
I stated: I'm discovering new things it can do almost every time I use it. (Your emphasis in my statement.)

So, if you have problems with an app that I approve of, it doesn't give you the right to infer there's a problem with my learning new things via that app!

Even in this post from you, you dis the Snipping Tool by saying it works like controlled bug rollout.

BTW, you seem to be working with an Insider Preview version of the Snipping Tool. Why not tell us what's wrong instead of making statements out of the blue without telling us what you have found wrong.

But few dare to beat me in spelling/speaking/writing in my native language!
It's all well and good that you can boast about your linguistic expertise in your native language, but you have to remember this is an English speaking forum.
Even with all the differences between the true English (UK) and the varied dialects of other native English countries, we still strive to remain civil and respectful toward each other. We get it. You are unhappy with snipping tool and with MS. That doesn't mean everyone else is nor that the snipping tool is working incorrectly for everyone. Being combative solves nothing, most certainly not any problem you might have..

OK, it works for you. But it has problem on my side!
If it's not working correctly for you, go to settings>apps>installed apps>snipping tool>3 dots>advanced options
First try repairing it. Restart.
If that doesn't work, reset it from that same location.

If it still doesn't work, do a repair install.

You said discovering new things. I consider the new things as new features in the app, not your discovering! I said there was no new thing (new feature), they have ruined the current feature. I never dissed anybody's app anywhere! I don't know why anybody on this forum considers my words as a hook ✊!!!

It seems like YOU are boasting about YOUR native language! I didn't mean to boast; I just meant I started working well on my native language when I was in elementary school! AFAIK, all languages have the same background process, they are just various glyphs with different tones! I love Persian, Arabic, Turkish, English, and most languages I've seen and heard about. I love Japanese glyphs more than my native glyphs!! And I love Arabic tone the most (I'm not Arab, no offence to them)!

I swear an oath (!!!) that I'm one of the calmest and most polite characters in my small town! I swear..! I never insult anybody in my native language. So it is nonsense to insult somebody in another language! I never insult any character here and there. I just behave in binary about the apps. I like it or I hate it, and this is like a joke, and don't take it seriously! It's just my opinion about the apps, not the characters or companies behind the apps! Actually, I like Microsoft, if they were wise enough, they could take such criticism as a positive guideline to progress their apps better.

If it's not working correctly for you, go to settings>apps>installed apps>snipping tool>3 dots>advanced options
First try repairing it. Restart.
If that doesn't work, reset it from that same location.

If it still doesn't work, do a repair install.
By the way, I have done all the things above, you didn't see my other posts I shared above.

OK, 'nuff said from me. As a last suggestion you might check if snipping tool will work in a clean boot. You might have another app interfering with it. I hope you find a solution to your problem.

You said discovering new things. I consider the new things as new features in the app, not your discovering! I said there was no new thing (new feature), they have ruined the current feature. I never dissed anybody's app anywhere! I don't know why anybody on this forum considers my words as a hook ✊!!!
There is definitely a language barrier here, sir. If US English were your native language, you would have understood what I was talking about.

I pride myself in that I consider my grammar pretty good, but instead of boasting, I try to be sure there are no errors in my writing. I was at the head of my class in spelling and English in elementary school, but that's neither here nor there. Again, I will say: I say tomato, you say tomahto. What that means is that we have differing ways of saying things. There's that word again!

I discover new things every day, not necessarily within the realm of computers and software. Some of those "new things" have been around for aeons but I haven't come across them before. They are new to me! Thus, "I'm discovering new things." I have recently discovered a lot of "new things"

Let's say Microsoft just added a new feature to the Snipping Tool and included lots of new ways to use it. Let's also say that Microsoft has been busily adding new features to the Snipping Tool for the past six months. Let's further say I have just discovered the Snipping Tool.

Every time I use the Snipping Tool to create illustrations for the tutorials I write for my Senior Citizen students I find something new I can use. After awhile, I've found multiple ways to work on the tutorials using the Snipping Tool.

I go to ElevenForum and say that I really like the Snipping tool, that I'm learning lots of new things. And what do I get? I'm taken to task for being so stupid as to like the Snipping Tool someone else considers as garbage. We won't rehash all that, though.

The bottom line is that I'm taken to task for my description of what I'm learning. I'm told that people are not my students. Even today I'm told again that I'm using the wrong phraseology. And to top it off, I get a raised fist with three exclamation points behind it! What am I supposed to think?

With all due respect, instead of trying to correct my grammar/descriptions, you could have asked what I meant. I see things that word again! like misspelled words, bad grammar, every day, but I don't dare to correct them. Especially not in public! And nor would I attempt to correct someone whose native language is not the same as mine!

I don't want to be in debt! Don't insult any language, and don't call me Sir cause I'm not Sir, and I hate such nonsense (for me) titles! I'm not idiot enough to think that a language could have ownership! AFAIK, we LIKE to BE the owner of everything in the universe! Persian isn't my personal property. AFAIK, once upon a time God decided to spit me out from heaven on a part of the earth that you call Iran (but the correct name is Persia and don't worry cause this Persia has nothing to do with the Persia Empire or such nonsense things!).

Again! AFAIK, Language isn't something that somebody can be proud of! I didn't BOAST in my native language! I didn't have any intention to correct YOUR grammar! These are all images you (and another guy here) put side by side to make a movie (my character) about me in your thoughts. Just by saying two words, the 3rd WW started!

The raised fist with an exclamation mark means: Some guys on this forum think I am throwing a fist towards his/her face! Which is absolutely wrong.

IF! IF I had a wrong behaviour, OK! You need to hear this: Apology. So, an apology. I don't know why I said this for nothing, but Saying this does not detract from my character! Instead adds something new (like a new life) to somebody else.

I have seen racism and discrimination (on this forum) before. Every time I tried to answer, my post (not this post) was removed by a ghost (I never used any insulting/offensive term/word in my answers/replies/posts). This is an English community (before being a computer forum!), and I didn't have a right to answer. I was the wrong mind in the wrong place. I am man (!) enough to admit my mistake.

I can stand these things, if you laugh at me, make a joke of me and even use me as a punching bag for training (if I let you), I would laugh with you at the same time! But the only things I can't stand are these two things (racism and discrimination), cause they have no room in my brain's dictionary. And don't worry! I'm not any more here. As I said it was my fault cause I was at the wrong place. I just wasted my time. I didn't realize it before cause MY NATIVE language was not ENGLISH.

Just my last words, please don't be unsatisfied with me, cause you are on the absolute wrong route (about me). A kiss with a bouquet with the utmost respect and love from here to you.🤟❤️🫶🌸🌺🌷🌹🌼💐🌻🥀
