Start Window Annoyance

Windows 11
When I log in the Start window is displayed. If there is some way to stop this from happening then I would love to know how to do that.

Assuming that this "feature" cannot be avoided, is there any way to get rid of it, or do I just have to wait for it to finally do so? It covers up the browser I want to use and I have tried everything I can think of to tell it to go away, which it eventually does, but in a timely manner would be nice.

Thanks -

george

I'm not getting what you're describing, George. Could you post a screenshot so everyone has a clearer picture of what's happening?

Do you mean the lock screen? If so read this
If not as @jvickers said post a screenshot

Before you try this make sure you have your logon background picture correct as sometimes it will not let you change it.
Hope this helps, let us know

Do you mean the lock screen? If so read this...
If @GLSmyth does mean the lock screen appears at start up, and has to be dismissed to get to the sign-in screen, then turn off 'require sign in on wakeup'.

If it's something else, then we need to see a screenshot, the OP description could mean any number of things.

I get this too. It happens when you use "Start" to log off or sign out. It's like Windows remembers the last app opened and leaves it that way when you log back on. It started for me after the last few updates. I now avoid it my using a keyboard shortcut to (for me) put my PC to sleep.

I'm not sure why it's popping up unless you're accidentally hitting the Windows key.
If @GLSmyth had 'shut down' by selecting Sleep or Hibernate from the Start menu, then at 'start up' after the sign in screen you'd resume with the Start menu still open, as it was when you suspended Windows. If so, the just click the Start icon to dismiss it.

I followed the instructions for Windows 11 sign in automatically without a password, which removed my wife's account. (g) So I added it back and the Start screen still comes up, but only stays there now goes away when I click away from it, so that's okay.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

If @GLSmyth had 'shut down' by selecting Sleep or Hibernate from the Start menu, then at 'start up' after the sign in screen you'd resume with the Start menu still open, as it was when you suspended Windows. If so, the just click the Start icon to dismiss it.
This happens when my wife goes to her account then I switch back to mine. The only way (I know of) to get to another account is to use the Start box. Since it only stays there now until I click away from it (which is was not doing before) I guess it is not so much of an annoyance. I'm guessing that something was "stuck" before I did the above mentioned things.

Yes, that too would still have the Start menu showing when you switch back, as it was open when your wife used it to switch accounts. That's normal, does exactly the same for me.

There is another way. Click an empty part of the desktop, then press Alt+F4

My wife is less technical than I, so I think the annoyance being minimal is going to be the easiest path. (g)

try this if you want a desktop icon to switch users:
If you browse in C:\Windows\System32\ folder, you will come across an .exe file named tsdiscon.exe. This is the Session Disconnection Utility. This process disconnects the current session, and can be used to create a shortcut to switch users in a click.
To create a desktop shortcut, right-click on the desktop > New > Shortcut > Type :

C:\Windows\System32\tsdiscon.exe

Click Next > Name it Switch Users > Finish.

Give it a suitable icon.

I am not finding the file in that location, but I am finding it in Windows\WinSxS\wow64_microsoft-windows-t..es-commandlinetools_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22000.1_none_4548a15e322e11ac

Would that be the right file?

Thanks -
