Storage Spaces : Adding a drive

Hi,
I'm not sure if I am using the correct forum so please excuse me and point me in the right direction.

I have a Storage Spaces storage pool of 2 disks mirrored together, basically 2 old drives I found on the shelf and ideal for storing some general files, for now, they are 6Tb disks, so 5.45Gb available.

I now have a new larger drive and I am wondering I it is possible to assign the same amount of space to the storage pool, leaving the rest available for a standalone partition and change the resilience level (akin to raid 5) - the only option I appear to have is to add the whole space to the pool at which point I havent got a clue what it is doing in terms of resilience.

Any pointers appreciated.

Welcome to the forum and so sorry no one has answered you yet. Sadly, in this area of expertise I am not the one to do so as I do not use storage spaces nor RAID. I have never had a real need and from reading I decided it was not for me due to its impact on performance. Hopefully someone else will step in that has experience with storage spaces.

I don't use SS, but believe you have to assign complete drives, and cannot use partitions. See here.

You're correct, only complete drives. I looked at Storage Spaces once, but I prefer a true NAS with mirrored drives, I think it's better security. Putting more drives in the box and depending on a single processor and power supply isn't as secure as a truly separate NAS. My NAS also have a USB drive hanging off it that continually makes a backup copy of the NAS contents giving me yet another layer of backup.
