Hello,

I had an acer tablet running windows 10.
I could easily turn off the screen WITHOUT putting the tablet to sleep with several solutions:

via nircmd.exe :
nircmd monitor off

standby via SendMessage :
SendMessage, 0x112, 0xF170, 2,, Program Manager

When I send these commands, the screen turns off and all programs still run.
A simple touch on the touch screen turns the screen back on, and the tablet is still into the same screen.

Today I have a Surface Pro 7 running Windows 11.

The problem is that the two command above turn off the screen, but :

- all the programs goes to sleep
- I have to press the power button, the touch surface does not wake up the tablet
- once the power button is pressed, I get the lock screen window.

Would there be an equivalent to the old method that I used in windows 10 ?

Thank you,

Aramas, this question can best be answered by any surface users her. Change the title of your thread to get their attention. Use something like Surface Pro 7-How can I turn off screen without putting to sleep

PS: I read many posts on the Microsoft forum about the Surface dating back to 2013 with folks complaining about the exact same problem. I never saw a definitive answer.

Hello all,

If someone need it too, I "solved" it by doing all these steps :

Bringing back hidden options in battery performance :
So you can config sleep mode to just turn monitor off and still continue to use app ( listen music with screen off for example )

Disable lock screen :

Disable login screen :

By doing all these steps, trying to turn off the screen with a shortcude with nircmd or SendMessage to programmanager still not work.
App goes to sleep.
BUT
Workaround that I found is to use this cmd :

  • powercfg -change -monitor-timeout-ac 1

This cmd set the time for the screen to turn off in 1 minute.
After you can set it to 0 so it desactivate it.
You can automate this cmd with domotic program.

Hello -- I use a Surface Pro with Win11 as a host from Parsec client or VR based software like Immersed or iSpatial.

My question is if this amazing method put together by Aramas above will allow me to set it up to opperate the PC remotely with the screen off ? Then I could use 'nircmd monitor on' at the end of my session if needed for example.

Thanks for any advice!
