thanks to all for the answers but also by downloading the latest iso or creating the media tool the update does not work I also tried to uninstall the drivers of my printer thinking it had an IPP Class Drive driver but nothing to do from all post that I read here and on the internet I only understood that this error code is a false problem in the sense that it is a block inserted by the same microsoft that to prevent any crashes due to system incompatibility nor blocks the update I believe that the only solution could be a clean installation but honestly I have neither the desire nor the time to format everything:(

Did you run the command as written in command prompt as admin?

Code:
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\vdsldr.exe" /f

Just created an account to answer this. Had the EXACT same problem, same error message and the computer is fully capable of running W11.

Pulling my hair out trying to fix this, ran all the commands, disabled this that and the other, even a repair install of 21H2 made no difference o_O

Then came across the reg del command advised by Tekkie Boy worked a treat. Thanks a million (y)

It is not unusual for MS to put holds on certain hardware configurations/ driver installs if they detect issues, this might be happening in your case. Currently there is a hold on systems using Intel Smart Sound Technology that I know of, there may well be others and your system has a component that could cause system instability, it could be hardware, BIOS, firmware, drivers or a combination.
I would just wait a few more weeks until the October ISO is available with all patches/ updates rolled in and try then.
I tend to agree with you. Ever since MS came out with Security Updates starting in August my PC with Gigabyte Z390 UD MB is unable to successfully update Windows 11 Cumulative Updates that come out every month. As an experiment I took my old Windows 10 imaged drive and same thing happened when it tried to install KB5018410 on that machine. It's either a driver issue or the BIOS is not compatible with these updates. MS needs to fix this issue because it's affecting thousands of machines out there.

It is not always down to MS to fix the issues, it is also the responsability of the driver/ BIOS vendors to make changes, if the problem is due to security issues/ non compliant code etc then MS is being sensible in putting a hold in place until the vendors issue updates, Windows isn't always the weak point. ;-)

Hello,

I registered to say thank you.
The regedit command worked perfectly and resolved the issue.
What I did
1/ Open prompt command line with admin rights
2/ Type the reg command
3/ Restart
4/ Execute the update from Windows Update

Thanks a lot mate !!!

I realize this thread is marked closed, but my issue is very similar. When attempting the 22H2 upgrade after it was offered in Updates, the install failed with the error code 0x80888002. I used the update trouble shooter and it appeared detected problems had been corrected and I could try again. I believe that was on 10/12/2022, and since then the update no longer is offered on Windows Updates.
Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you for your reply! I'd read this suggestion from you in this thread, but I wasn't sure it would apply for me. However, I just tried it and got the attached. Not sure what to do now.

Thanks again for your continued attention!
Did so: the above code produced "No instances available".
Should add that while waiting for your response I deleted the Windows Update cache. No success from that ; only one recent security update was then shown which I downloaded and installed.

Sorry guys if this has been answered before, I didn't have time to read all the posts. Even if your computer is compliant, let pretent it isn't. In that case, download the latest 22H2 ISO, mount it (open with Explorer) and run Setup. Before proceeding, disable all non-Microsoft services from startup and any startup applications. Also disable your antivirus, including Windows Defender and, most important, disconnect from the internet. Replace the hidden file C:\$Windows.~BT\sources\appraiserres.dll with an empty dummy. To create the dummy file right-click on your desktop and create a new text document. Rename it (including the .txt extension) to appraiserres.dll. Then delete the original and copy-paste the dummy in the sources folder. After having done ALL the above, including disconnecting from the internet, proceed with the upgrade. See relevant thread for more details.

Bought my new Win 11 computer less than a month ago and immediately updated via Windows update. No problems until I was notified several days later that 22H2 was available. I downloaded and then installed it, only to find the update had failed with the infamous 0x90888002 error. I have a disk image made prior to that fiasco, and I am considering restoring that as well as employing the idea of using the latest 22H2 ISO. Too early in the am here to do anything yet, though, but thanks for the comprehensive reply!

I can't help but think that some of these problems arise from an ISP or Microsoft. I spent two days frustrated that the update app wouldn't bring up 22H2 and I couldn't get installation assistant to run on my main computer. It simply went into na na land. I got the same error message others have posted. I thought it might be the hardware since the computer is 10 years old and I was ready to pull the drive from the computer and put it in one my backup systems. I got tired and went to bed. Then last night I ran installation assistant again and the computer updated to 22H2 without incident. Perhaps the Microsoft servers were flooded with update requests and simply had to control the flood. I don't know. I'm updating my backup systems now.

You would have done it much easier if you manually downloaded the ISO and run Setup from there. Why wait for Windows Update?
