Windows 11
Greetings.
Today I updated my BIOS om my mobo, loaded default settings, saved and then boot. When I got to the login screen, I was met by a text saying that my PIN-code was not available due to some security change in the PC. "Click here to reconfigure PIN-code". But when I did that a small windows opened saying, that I have to use an app from Microsoft Store to do this. There I could select YES or NO, but nomatter what I choose, the small windows just shut down, and nothing happened. No change of changing login method, or change user. After trying what I could think of in the BIOS "Secure Boot", I gave up and flashed the BIOS back to what it was before. "Load default setting", saving BIOS values, reboot .... Same problem. My pin-code was not available! Ok, I then booted up fra Acronis USB-key, and restored the complete boot disk, 3 small partitions and c:, and then tried to boot. But no.
Where the **** is this saved? I flashed back to old BIOS, I restored the complete boot-drive (not just c:), and yet it says, that my PIN-code is not available.
How can I make this Windows 11 good again? Does this mean, that it is not possible to flash a new BIOS in Windows 11? (I have not done that since Windows 10)

Please help

If you have a TPM (firmware or hardware), I believe that the Windows PIN is stored there. Updating the BIOS may clear the PIN from a firmware TPM.

You might click on the "I forgot my PIN" option on the login screen. If you don't have the password for your Microsoft account, things may get complicated.

If you installed Windows 11 with the TPM in the BIOS and put the PIN, it must work normally, if you upgraded the BIOS, then when you restart the computer in the BIOS, the TPM must be turned on that I did not have a PIN to enter the windows, re-entering the BIOS set the TPM and everything is fine

Good post.

That may be correct.

I thought that the defaults were changed under newer BIOSes, intended for 11, but it's certainly worth a check. If the device security settings are off, turning them back on may avoid having to jump through more hoops.

Normally the keys held in the TPM are not cleared with a BIOS update, you would have to specifically choose to clear/ reset the TPM, also loading BIOS defaults should not clear the TPM keys either, unless there is an option listed to include that function while setting defaults.
Disabling the TPM would of course prevent Windows from checking the validity of security keys held there and cause boot/ login issues.

When BIOS is updated on my motherboard, TPM gets disabled, once enabled, PIN does not work anymore (I had to reinstall).

The others are fully correct on this. Updating the BIOS can cause this.

However, I would like to highlight that it is generally a bad idea to run "load defaults" because that, alone, can definitely cause this, as it will not only reset settings but invalidate platform trust technology / TPM too.

You can still manually log in with your password and set up the PIN again.

loading BIOS defaults should not clear the TPM keys either, unless there is an option listed to include that function while setting defaults.
Correct, it should not do that. But in quite some cases, it does.

The proper behavior for this would be, when you have a separate clear security settings option just below the general load defaults one.

When you updated the BIOS the TPM was reset. You should have the option to sign-in with your password. At the log-in screen click on the key icon.

I have updated bios twice in Win 11 and did not have this issue. But I never loaded default setting, either.

I have updated my BIOS 5 times under Win10 (over 3 years, mainly CPU patching) and once under Win11, each time I have had to load defaults as per the update procedure laid out by Acer, but have never used the clear keys option. The machine has always had secure boot enabled and has had the same PIN since day one, it has always worked fine after the updates.
Not once have I been locked out of Windows. I am not saying there are not BIOS out there that would clear keys when loading defaults, but that would be an extremely stupid way to write a BIOS as the TPM holds more than just the Win login info and if arbitrarily cleared would lead to a lot of unhappy and frustrated consumers.

On ASUS motherboards, you need to rename the BIOS file before you try to flash the BIOS.

First, when this happens, there is NO other way to login. "Forgot your PIN-code"-option is not there, using another login method is not there, shifting to another user is not there. The ONLY active thing on the login screen is "Click here to reconfigure PIN-code". After reading all your posts here, I tried to change the settings in TPM save reboot into BIOS load default, save reboot into BIOS. TPM and SecureBoot are NOT affected by "load default setting". I then clean-installed Windows 11, and when it was up and running, I tried to disable TPM, and then the error came back at next boot. BUT !!!! when I here clicked on "Click here to reconfigure PIN-code", after some seconds a new window opened and let me login with my password and then make a new PIN-code.
Hmmm, it seems that my newest backup of Windows11 has an error. I then tried to take my backups backwards, and YES, a backup 3 weeks old did the same and let me login with this "new" window on the login screen. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction 🤗

But, error in my Windows 11 or not, if a BIOS update can cause this, many others will have problems, as windows 11 come with warnings "Are you SURE you want to change your PIN-code?" and some more, and I think that people not used to fiddle around with stuff like this, will back down from trying.

Assuming we're talking about the Windows "sign in" Pins...

Actually, the pin is stored in Windows and has nothing to do with TPM use. Nor would a BIOS reset, or update change/reset it.

The pin is specifically stored here: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Ngc.

Also - What Is the Ngc Folder in Windows 10?

The folder is created when you create your login credentials. It is a protected folder and requires permission to open it. Anyway, in my experience with BIOS resets/updates (updating my BIOS after this post), I've never had to reset or re-create a PIN. We'll, see if this is still true

I still think that the TPM in the BIOS got reset or corrupted when you did the BIOS update. The main thing is that you were able to solve your problem. I've only experienced a pin number problem on my old Acer Spin laptop. Sometimes the pin number wouldn't be recognized and I would have to log-in with my password. I finally solved it by going into the BIOS and clearing the TPM. After that all I had to do was reset my pin number in my MS account.

I have no idea since I didn't troubleshoot your laptop. But I know for fact, that when my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga X1, or Asus Zenbook Prime gets/got a BIOS update my Pin didn't change or get wiped.

The fact is Windows puts the login credentials in an Ngc folder on the OS. That that folder isn't wiped away or altered after a BIOS update or reset. If you need a deep dive white paper on the how's and why's, I'm afraid I don't have that. It's all black box to me.
