So I just noticed there's a different Windows Update icon in Windows 11, which is shown on the main page of Settings
Schermafbeelding 2022-06-01 014841.png

Doing a bit of search, I found 584x584 JPEG image of it and with some online tools I managed to make a transparant round icon out of it. One issue is that I can't keep the inner arrows non-transparant because it's the same white color as the background. Not sure if the quality is good but it does look sharp enough when it is shown in my Start menu. Here it is:

Well done bro !

Here's the white filled version.

Thanks but for some reason the arrows are still transparent. I can see that when I'm dragging the icon over other icons, even though it looks white when I'm not dragging it. How is that possible?

I suppose the ico file itself displays normally (if the name is different).
Surely a conflict with the old one, you need to clear the icon cache.
This should normally solve the problem.

The reason because the v1 icon looked a bit too sharp or pixelized is because only the 256 image was in it. When smaller images are lucking, Windows automatically converts the closer one, but not in a great way.
That's why standard icons include 8 different size (256 /64 /48 /40 /32 /24 /20 /16px) which are in many cases "more" than just basic conversions.

You surely noticed with the last reworked set I shared. It mainly concerns separate lines and positions in each size, but not circles/orb, as proportionality is kept for those. There are a few other aspects to deal with, but explaining everything here wouldn't be useful to everyone, so I will post all the details as a file to download, for creators who are interested, in the near future.

Hi @paradoxum ,

Specially for those who restored the W10 Explorer ribbon,
here's the icon with the pin removed from the "Navigation pane", but still visible on the ribbon.

Thanks, I haven't done any imageres file modding yet at all - what tool should I grab for replacing the icons in a file and saving it?
Also if I modify the imageres file, well, the iconset I'm using is applied with 7tsp, and inside the zip I expected to find an imageres.dll file, but there's:
1654255107119.png
Would I just replace the icon in my windows/imageres.dll file, copy that, rename it to imageres.dll.mun.res, then stick it back inside the zip so when I apply it again later it has the change, will that work or am I way off the mark?

@paradoxum

There are a few answers you are looking for, which are directly in this thread, (issue with CustomizorGod /check comments frome here and reddit), and might be helpful for your other question.
I also found this other thread, found in the suggestions down the page.
In this Personalization section, there are many threads on this matter.

Sometimes, reg files can be created for some very particular cases.

I made a tutorial not very long ago on the forum about changing System icons manually.
But careful, the replacement with changing file's name doesn't work anymore.
You will have to copy/replace the files Windows Offline, as @spapakons confirmed.
I also made a tuto of this a while ago, on a french forum "AaZ Team" (you can translate easily)

I hope these grouped info will save you time in the forum and help you succeed.

Well, let him first deal with simply replacing explorer system icons, changing the System Tray battery one wasn't his present request.

Though, this issue you have solved is interesting.
Changing these icons is possible thanks to ExplorerPatcher.
Does ungrouping them mean that you just have to choose "Windows 10 flyout" (or 7) in the properties ?
(and then being able to replace the C:\Windows\SystemResources\batmeter.dll.mun with your new customized file ?)

Thanx for your share. (y)

Using W11 OS on customers' computers more and more often, and sometimes on my mum's new laptop.
This software gives two modes. The default is Windows 10 mode with the taskbar icons ungrouped and the full right-click menu with Task Manager etc, like in Windows 10. In this mode customization works exactly like the latest version of Windows 10. The Windows 11 mode restores the grouped taskbar icons and only taskbar properties when you right-click. Once you group the taskbar icons, they revert to default Windows 11 icons. You must ungroup them to use any customization. Million thanks to the poster who shared that with us. I would not have found it myself.

@spapakons

Yes, you are right.
A big Thank you to dev @valinet for this great extension & @The-Hive for spreading on their threat.

Appologies, I thought ungrouping ment dealing with separating all the bitmap images of the battery charge (!)
I've always preferred the "Never combine taskbar buttons" view since XP, grouping them still seems to me a strange idea in 2022, unless you're just using a phone.

Using W11 OS on customers' computers more and more often, and sometimes on my mum's new laptop.

I never wanted to change any systray icons you must have me confused, all I want is to remove the pin icon.
Is this guide; Custom Icons for Windows 11 Thread (Folders, Dropbox, Google Drive, Podcasts, NVME Drive, Steam, Adobe) basically how to do that? I got some time today to try and get it sorted.

Thanks

I am not sure, but the pin icon could be inside imageres.dll.mun Look carefully, and replace it if you find it with an empty or white rectangle.

A careful look at the icons included in imageres.dll.mun reveals that the pin arrows you want to get rid off are there with numbers 5100 and 5101. Also there are some "empty" icons such as 1301, 1302, 1303 (unless there is something barely visible I didn't realize). I would extract one of the "empty" icons and then replace the pin arrow icons with the empty icon. Ta-da! No more annoying pins visible on Windows Explorer. Don't forget to copy C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun at another location, since you cannot edit it directly. Once you modify imageres.dll.mun at the other location you have to restart in Command Prompt to replace the original file with the modified file. See previous posts for details.

@paradoxum

Pin icon: imageres.dll.mun #5100
(the one I shared earlier is removed in small sizes, and kept for big sizes /explorer ribbon)

Which step is problematic ?

I haven't had chance to sit down and follow it yet I only tried with customizer god - I was just clarifying about not the systray icon.

Answer from post in Custom Icons for Windows 11 Thread.

Can you explain why doing this is any different than using an icon theme patcher that patches the mun files etc?

I already did.
The result is no different with using a patcher, but as I specially mentioned :
.../ this app does not work correctly depending on the build used /...

.../ I prefer to know & make the registry modifications myself. /...

(Because even doing so I find windows using system32.dll icons everywhere).
.../ When you look at, say, C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll to chose an icon for a shortcut, Windows silently redirects you to C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun
It is that collection of .mun files that now holds Windows icons.
Compare the sizes of C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll & C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun to appreciate this.
And you can, if you want, make a copy of an .mun then rename it back to a .dll then you'll be able to see its icons directly when trying to chose one for a shortcut etc.

Customizer god has not been updated for years and it probably does not know how to work with the new icon files. This would account for the comment on its webpage about not being updated for v1903 & later.

All the best,
Denis

An interesting thing to know, is that adding icons in C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll seems to work too, and they just individually replace the ones from C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun

Also note that C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll has always been a file which must never be modified.
Since W10 1903, the new C:\Windows\SystemResources\shell32.dll.mun can be, but unfortunately they will be reset after a major Windows update.
The new file will contain compatible info for your updated system, so icons will have to be re-patched on this new one, and not be replaced with an old saved shell32.dll.mun file.
