I too have purchased Macrium on version 8, find it the best tool for me personally and have 0 regrets for purchasing. I snagged a 4 pack deal when it went on sale.

Well, the onetime version is for the history of the major version. So, right now 8 or 8.1....but it could go as high as 8.9. A paid subscription will get all of these versions. It wouldn't be until version 9 for you to decide if it's worth upgrading that license.

Yeah, I've always wondered why Windows doesn't include functionality similar to Time Machine. While not a super robust application with tons of features and such, it does what it does well and just works. Your mac craps out, you simply setup your mac again and restore from your time machine backup and viola...you are right back to where you were. You get a new mac, you can just restore from time machine and you are right back in business.

As far as Macrium goes, I've never even looked at the manual. Imaging a disk and restoring an image has seemed simply enough for me. I don't keep much data on the machine itself, so I don't really care about differentials and incrementals. As long as a i have a relatively recent full backup, I have all that I need/want.

Most definitely not - it has basic features and not a patch on paid versions. I have tested them extensively if you see my posts.
