VLC is good for streaming video over a LAN and for the fact that it plays popular video file formats without needing to install any codecs separately.

But when it comes to things like low power consumption or eliminating stutter/choppiness during playback of those specific video files that are a little bit more demanding on low powered hardware or hardware that you have limited the power consumption of (i.e., to make it perform silent during the playback...), K-Lite Codec Pack Full with MPC-HC and madVR is, and always has been, king of the hill. Full end of story.

Anytime I run an mp4 file in VLC, I get a hiccup and it hesitates for a few seconds and then it plays.

Only does it on mp4 files, not mkv or avi

VLC is set as my default player. Don't know what's going on. Sometimes I get a corrupt file message in the message bar at the bottom of the window, but then it goes away. And I know the file isn't corrupt.

Download both K-Lite Codec Pack Full and K-Lite Codec Pack Update. Codec Guide: K-Lite Codec Pack - For Windows 11 / 10 / 8.1 / 7
Choose MPC-HC as the default player, and (optionally) choose what specific filetypes you want it to be the default player for. And choose madVR as the renderer. There are a whole plethora of other settings, and although there is a bit of a learning curve, most settings can be left at their default. If you don't know what a setting is for, then I highly suggest that you just leave that setting alone until you found your answer.

Again, once you see what makes MPC-HC + madVR superior to all other players, there is no going back. The primary reason why VLC is more popular is due to a persistent lack of awareness among most of its users.

I had to uninstall the K-Lite Codec pack a few months ago. It was literally causing Windows Explorer to freeze whenever I played anything video. Once uninstalled, things got a lot better and it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.

I too have been using VLC for many years and used to never have an issue with mp4s until the last year or so.

I wasn't just talking about issues. VLC can also be downloaded from the same website (see the link I posted above) so, there really is no such thing as a holy inquisition against VLC. Neither solution can be perfect, but that in fact is why you'll just have to open your own eyes and see the light. Or keep refusing to see the light, like the majority of VLC users. It really is that simple, and, it happens a lot.

I just tested out v3.0.20 by downgrading my install of VLC Media Player.
and this issues seems to have gone away.
that is the 1.3GB movie file opened immediately without delay...
Huway lol.

VLC has been the standard alternative to that sh*tty built-in Windows Media Player that many people complain about. I've been using it for about 15 years or so, as far back as XP days. It usually plays anything and everything. That's why I like it. You don't have to install any extra codec packs. The codecs are built right in.

In fact, the hiccups I've been experiencing seem to have more to do with Windows Explorer stalling out for a few seconds than the VLC player itself. Once VLC kicks in and opens up, it plays the file smoothly.
