Another point: How much faster is your modern hardware anyways for the basic stuff that Winsat measures? I'd say almost nothing has changed in the last 12 years. Small performance bumps here and there and only remarkable performance bumps for optimized OP codes which WEI does not even test. My Laptop from 2010 is almost as fast as my laptop from 2020 except for the graphics.

It seems to measure HW performance (don't know relative to what and that's a problem), difference from first system I quoted to this last one (according to other benchmarks) is 10 - 20 times faster depending on the components.
Just compare a modern SATA3 HDD (SATA2 that I had on old system was SATA2 and much slower)

And NVME SSD now

How could they have (almost)same score ???
Ps. As far as I remember first WEI was counting to 5.

Your current score should be about 9-9.5, not 5

Heck even my laptop with quite slow SSD, gets 9.1

I know, as I said that first WEI in W7 (until Sp1) was counting to 5 as top score.

So? How much of a difference in real world task do you see if you compare a system with a SATA SSD with about 500MB/s vs a PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive with 8000MB/s transfer speeds?

I can answer that: Absolute MINIMAL. Only place you see any form of gains is if you do heavy file transfers from another similarily fast drive or do high res video editing and use the fast disk as a scratch disk. Windows performance is unaffected.

Just an example:

I have 4 computers here. For RAM bandwidth I get almost same score for all 4, and the bandwidth is almost the same. I can even calculate the theoretical max bandwidth manually and the number is about the same as the measurements gives.

Computer 1: Laptop from 2011
Computer 2: Desktop PC from 2010
Computer 3: Laptop from 2020
Computer 4: Desktop PC from 2017

And actually computer 4 has the slowest RAM which dropped WEI for RAM a bit.

But what do I know...I digress...

Mechanical HDD versus even SATA SSD is enormous, SATA vs NVME much less but visible.
First case, minutes (opening large programs and Windows updates).
Second case seconds but noticeable specially with Win updates.
I have regular W11 on NVME and Insider Dev on SATA SSD (same PC).
Win updates on SATA take (almost)twice as long with considerable load on rest of system with drive holding close to or 100% load, on NVME 1-5%.
No wonder that people with HDDs complain about updates taking so long. That disk and system load impacts slower PCs quite hard, not so much to none on better PCs. On this PC I can play games with no FPS loss while updates are running, On a 2 core laptop with SATA3 SSD I can barely open and use a browser while updating.

Come on Mike, why are you comparing a Core 2 Duo or similar laptop CPU with a 8-core desktop CPU? OFC you can do more on the desktop at the same time.

And ofc you are claiming your laptop gives you a WEI score above 9, right?

At least it reminded me that I am not making full use of my Gen4 M.2 SSD speed. I have it plugged in on secondary slot.
It somehow has a purpose by providing an overview of your hardware performance. For detailed performance, that is what benchmarks are for.

I have a PC with a SATA 3 SSD running at SATA 2 because that's what the mobo supports and it runs at twice the speeds you're saying yours does. It gets 250 MB/S sequential reads and writes. The HDD in the same machine runs at about 115.

I'm actually thinking about doing just that. Currently I have a SATA3 SSD and 2 empty NVMe slots. I was considering switching to a gen 4 NVMe drive but you're making me have second thoughts. Wouldn't there be a difference in gaming performance?

One thing, it would improve my WEI score.

Just run in W10 on 2 core laptop.
Disk score 8.6 and exactly same SSD running W11 insider Dev on Ryzen PC 8.25 while 970 NVME also at 8.25.

That 970 result is interesting. Are you certain it measured the correct drive? I would assume a score around 9 (+-1) for that drive or even a bit more. It's the EVO drive right? Although the EVO isn't the fastest of the bunch...

Just look again at save results. It is 8.6 in W10 on that laptop which has same 120GB Kingston A200 SATA SSD as what I have W11 Insider Dev on Ryzen PC where score is 8.1.
